Tipi tent sew on guy out

Has anybody sewn on extra guy outs for a tent tipi? I’ve got a cimmaron I’m looking to add on to for more room when snow hits.

I have never sewn new onto a purchased shelter but I have made a tipi and many tarps. I use gutted paracord for the stake loops and a patch of reinforcing fabric if needed. I just do 3 rows of straight stitch(with multiple passes back and forth) evenly spaced where the loop attaches. I can add pics later today when I am home.

That would be awesome. Are you talking silnylon? I’m going to be adding where there are no seams either. Just wondering on durability sewing straight into the material.

Technically PU nylon but same same for your purposes.

I would recommend a reinforcing patch, especially if you are adding onto the face of the fabric where there is no seam. The multiple layers of fabric in a seam help and can mitigate the need for reinforcement. I typically use a heavier weight nylon or 500d cordura.

I would definitely add reinforcement. It isn't the stitches that need to hold, it is the fabric. The threads would rip through the thin fabric.

If it were me, I put a reinforcement strip on the inside, possibly some waterproofing tape, and then make a small fold and sew a "seam" to then attach the cord to that. Sewing it like that would completely change the way that the stress is put on the silnylon.

Yes, I had additional guy lines added the seams so that all of the panels on the Cimarron are under tension. It really opens some up some space, addresses any sag and handles the wind like a storm shelter with 13 stakes holding it in place.

No, I had them done at gear repair shop called San Juan Sewing. He cut the grommets to match the factory pieces. I did the seam sealing. He charged me $50.

What's the preference split for the "hinge" for the lid? Front opening (lift towards your chin) vs. the rear opening (lift away from you)?

What type of padding do you want? A soft foam or a stiff foam?

Cut big circles and a slit in the middle. Glued them to my Cimmaron and they have held up quite well in moderate wind. I figure if they let loose, I'm back to the factory style at worst and no additional holes from sewing in a patch.

These are all I have on my phone and aren't the best but gives you an idea. Used parchment paper on a flat table and glued it heavy and then put a heavy flat weight on it overnight. I had plenty of adhesive so went back around the edge kinda like seam sealing extra protection.

Went to basement to take a better pic...this shows it better. Added the cord loop and a line loc to every tie down point. All my stakes for each tie down point all have about 6-8 feet of cordage that are perm. tied that makes it super fast to run through the line locs and add tension without fooling with knots in the field. Equally as fast to take down.

Interesting too. I’m getting a lot of good ideas from everybody. I like the excuse to pull out the sewing machine though, so I’m leaning toward something with that as an option.
