Tikka Trigger Guard

First off, I really don’t like the plastic trigger guard on my Tikka. I have been spending an inordinate amount of time trying to find a metal trigger guard for a Stocky’s VG Ultra Carbon Hunter for my Tikka. There is one I really like on High Desert Rifle Works but it says that gunsmith work may be necessary to install (which I would like to avoid).

1. Does anyone have any experience with this particular installation combination and if so did it require a gunsmith?
2. Are there any options that will go in this stock reliably from other manufacturers?

I have searched on Rokslide and other forums but I just cannot find a clear answer. Redirect me if I am missing something. Thanks in advance.

I have 3 of the Mountain Tactical bottom metal. I’ve had them in a few different stocks (factory, Boyds, Mesa/pure precision) without issue.

I have high desert bottom metal. It was a drop in fit in a stockys stock I had, but it required a little sandpaper work on my alterra stock. They come with shims as well in case the inlet depth is off. Honestly I think any metal bottom metal could potentially do this, the oem tikka stocks are tight and it usually takes a tiny bend in the plastic guard to seat it—aluminum guard wont bend, so the stock inlet may need a little extra room. (The alternative is to make it too small, and then the other half of their customers complain because of the unsightly gap). Some 80 grit on a dowel or some careful dremel work should have it fitted quick.

I’ve got both the MT & high desert in Rokstocks. If I did any modifications they were minor enough I don’t remember. The shims help to get proper magazine seating.

The Stockys VG and Rokstok inletting is VERY tight. They are the only aftermarket stocks I’ve used that have required shimming and sometimes sanding.

The high desert bottom metals do come with shims and most of the time they install without a fuss. Sometimes they require extra shims or sanding to get mags to seat fully without excessive force.

I say this in personally owning 8 rokstoks with 6 of them using high desert bottom metal. I also own 3 Stockys VG which have the same “issue”.

With factory plastic you will likely not have the issue.

I have a mountain tactical bm I like it however with my 6.5cm in the stockys vg hunter it does not feed reliably. It does feed just fine when using the factory BM in the vg stock.
The mountain tactical BM does work fine in the vg stock with my 30-06 action

I have found that the factory polymer (calling it plastic is a disservice to how stout it actually is) is quite good. The only reason to change it is aesthetics, if I am being honest. Or, you need more room in the trigger guard for really thick-fingered gloves.
I have AtlasWorx and MT bottom metals a couple of my Tikkas. One AtlasWorx lives in a Manners stock and didn't require any fitting at all. The other AtlasWorx and two MT are on Stocky's stocks. One of the MTs installed just fine, the other and the AW required just a tiny bit of sanding in the front to get it to go in with a slight interference fit, which is what I like. I will add that the AtlasWorx bottom metal in the Stocky's stock does sit a little bit proud, but not enough for me to worry about. They all feed fine from both factory and MT Gen2 mags.

What don’t you like about the trigger guard?

P
I am spending 2k+ to put together a Tikka that looks and feels the way I want and making that investment to leave a cheap looking trigger guard in place doesn’t make sense to me. It is personal preference based on aesthetics more than anything as I am doing a stainless trigger guard to match my stainless barrel.

High desert has worked well enough for me. Sample of 1 in a rokstok, needed to use shims for good mag lockup but it works well.

Also with High Desert, if you have to use too many shims to get your mags to fit, you can also use a small file to modify the mag release catch on the magazine itself in order to fit properly. This allows you to use less, or no, shims and keep the bottom metal flush with the stock. This is what I did with my Waters mags in my Rokstok using the High Desert. Instead of 4 shims under the metal, I was able to just use 1 front and back.
