Howdy I bought a mdt hnt 26 for my tikka t3x 300 wm and am going to mount a nightforce nxs 2.5-10 x42 on there. I was wondering what size ring I should get? I want it as low as possible. I’m going with unknown munitions rings. I am hoping I can get by with low rings. Thank you.IMG_7027.jpeg

Out of curiosity why so low? A more upright head position is way more comfortable

this is a 3-18 x44 with low sportsmatch rings which iirc are a tad lower than the UM lows. I think you be fine with a 42mm obj and the slightly higher UM lows. I can squeeze the cheap monstrum scope caps to close but there is contact with the caps and the handguard

with a jaw weld you'd want higher but I get behind my gun close my eyes and open them for setting my scope height. ymmv

As low as possible is almost always best because it provides a better cheekweld (unless you have an unusually tall goblin face) and a slightly flatter bullet trajectory.

You shouldn’t be forcing your cheek into the rifle, just using the stock to your cheek as a point of reference. Cranking your head over makes you more likely to force the stock down while also forcing your eye to strain more as you look upwards. The trajectory thing will change a bit, but not enough to make a difference. Especially in this era of rangefinders

As low as possible typically results in a better cheek weld, index, etc. Bullet trajectory also matters somewhat for a point blank zero, which is way more common in hunting than range finding and dialing.

Scope height doesn’t affect your MPBR. That’s more a factor of ballistics. Your trajectory changes a bit at close range, but your long range trajectory is your limitation on MPBR. I generally disagree low is better for index since you can index off anything on the side of your face consistently. Head more upright and placing the stock more center on your chest helps control recoil and spot your shots too.
