Has anyone tried sanding/shaping the Tikka recoil pad? I’m thinking about flattening, removing the curve and kick out at the bottom. Just not sure if it’ll sand like a shape to fit recoil pad?
It’s on a 223 so recoil absorption isn’t a concern.
Brand new gun, never even fired but I’m already finding the sharp bottom edge annoying.

That sharp lower corner is annoying. I’ve never chopped or reshaped it, I just replace with a Limbsaver 10803.

The recoil pad was one of the first things I replaced on my Tikka T3x. I went with the backfire pad. Kinda pricy but works great. Maybe a bit overkill for a .223 but a great pad.

I went ahead and tried shaping the existing pad. I figured worst case if it didn’t work out I would replace with a limb saver, but I don’t need anything more than the stock pad on the 223.
Pics say it all in the first pic with before and after shapes.
The pad was too soft to sand or shape easily but it worked out. Put in freezer for couple hours but couldn’t tell that it helped any. I tried 80 grit then 60 grit in orbital sander, then rasp which worked best to remove material.
Then a file, 120 and 400 wet sandpaper to finish.
Definitely like it much better now. Going to do a little more smoothing to clean it up later.
