Looking for any leads on reputable gunsmiths that can thread my barrel. Have the tikka G3X laminate stainless in 7mm mag and the barrel is not threaded, would love to be able to reduce recoil and stay on target after the shot more when solo hunting. Looking in and around the mid-willamete valley in Salem Oregon but don’t mind driving. Don’t want someone that says they can do it then get ghosted for 6 months.

I’m an Oregon guy too and live just out into the coastrange from you. I went through the same thing last year looking for someone local to thread my tikka. Ultimately I decided to just send it to Kampfelds as the guy above said. I didn’t really want to mail it but he was the same price and or cheaper than anyone around and he adds a shoulder to it that looks flawless.
Everyone around he wanted to just thread it and add an adapter. No thanks.
Turn around was about a month, well worth it.
You just strip the gun so it’s just the action and the barrel.

Yeah I was thinking I’d have to end up mailing it unfortunately. Lesson learned to never buy an unthreaded barrel again haha!

Even with some threaded tikkas they aren’t short enough and you end up cutting them down- so it’s always nice to know where to send them

So it’s legal to mail a barreled action and bolt? Last time I just drove my rifle to kampfelds shop and dropped it off but it’s like a 2 1/2 hour drive one way and was tough to find time. Did you just mail yours in the original Tikka box?

Yes. You are not transferring ownership of the rifle and you are shipping to an FFL to have work done. He will ship it back to your front door. And no, once you take it out of the stock, take off the trigger etc it will fit in smaller boxes. Just wrap and pack enough on both ends so it won’t punch through your box.

Copy that. That’s way easier than I thought it would be. Thanks man

I was going to recommend Morgan at class 3 machining but I just found out he passed away. He was great at what he did. I can't say I've ever had a better thread job than the ones he did for me.

So, you can go local or ship it out. If you can't find someone highly recommended locally,I'd highly suggest sending it out to a reputable smith. You've had a couple good ones recommended already. There are several others with there too. Local to myself in Utah, Preece Precision does a great job at a competitive price. Good luck with your search.

For those that have shipped barrels, what provider did you use? I am getting mixed feedback from shippers on if they are willing to ship a barrel…

Are you meaning: you go to drop off your package, and the shipper asks “what’s in it?”

Or am I misunderstanding the question in your post?

I’ve always just declared “Machine Parts” with appropriate value for insurance.

Another rokslider shipped me something listed as “Biden memorabilia.” Lol

Do what you want, but I would not tell them what I am shipping. I’d package it and send it on its way

Edit: for reference I sent a barrel to another member with 100 pieces of primed brass. Made it with no issues.

You don’t have to and should not lie about it. Dishonesty on a federal form is the height of stupidity.

I routinely ship rifles through USPS. When I ship a rifle, I tell them it is a rifle and if they raise any concerns, I tell them to check the little booklet behind the desk and that I am willing to sign an affidavit that it is an unloaded long arm. Then I shut up and let them read the booklet. Once, in a post office to which I had never been, I had to tell them the chapter in their own regulations that allowed me to ship it.

With a rifle barrel, I have never even had a question.

I believe USPS is the only way to do it legally now. Here is the reg on it:

Mailing to FFL Dealers by Non-FFL Owners: Non-FFL owners may mail rifles or shotguns domestically to FFL dealers, manufacturers, or importers in any state. These items must be mailed using a class of mail, product, or Extra Service that provides tracking and signature capture at delivery.

I suggest taking a printout of the regs with you to the post office. The clerk may ask you if the package contains a firearm. I do not suggest lying in answer to that question, though I don't volunteer that information unless asked. I've had a clerk freak out and refuse to mail a barreled action because I wasn't an ffl, despite my showing her the regs. Her supervisor quickly cleared it up once he was summoned.

I believe UPS now only ships for FFLs registered as such in their system:

UPS accepts packages containing Firearm Products for shipment only as a contractual service and only from Shippers who are licensed importers, licensed manufacturers, licensed dealers, or licensed collectors (as defined in Title 18, Chapter 44 of the United States Code) to authorized recipients, as outlined in an approved UPS agreement for the transportation of Firearm Products.
