Tikka Action Recommendations for 6.5 build

Not sure why I want to do this just want a 6.5. Have a 280ai that pushes 145 hammers to 3180 and 160 class bullets to 3000 its a lightweight rig or somewhat light but sports a 26" barrel love the rifle but really want a lightweight 6.5. I am torn between the PRC SAUM or even the SS. Leaning toward the SAUM or PRC as this will double for banging steal now and again. I hear the tikika action is the way to go always been a tikka fan since my first to M695s long ago and actually picked up a 270 wsm for my son. I hear a 270wsm would be good as a doner action but also heard even a standard mag action may even be better? I know I may need to add a bolt stop and new mags. Leaning toward a HCA barrel or proof finished at 24" edge fill stock not sure which one maybe a game warden but I've never owned one or stick with the hunter may even go blind mag to save weight any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I’m currently doing kinda the same thing.
I picked up a tikka 270 WSM as a donor action.
I’m having the action trued, adding a 26” 1 in 7.5 twist proof carbon, game hunter edge tech. Replacing the trigger spring and keeping the factory bottom metal and mag.
I can upgrade the trigger, bottom metal and mag later if needed.
I’m building a 25 PRC.

I bult a 6,5saum off a 270wsm tikka, its a great gun. Unfortunately I built it heavier than I really wanted so now Im building 25-284 to shoot the blackjack 131 in a lighter gun. Donor was my tikka 25-06. I run my SAUM out of factory Tikka WSM mags and .120 freebore. My buddy had a Tikka PRC built and the PRC has a longer freebore so the WSM mags were too short. He got a long action bolt stop and runs the .300/7mmag magazines with no issues.

I did a 300 win mag to 270wsm. All I needed for the switch was a barrel and an HCA mag.

Whatever you choose you will want a mag bolt face for the conversion to say a 6.5 prc.

I did a 6.5 PRC on a 300 win mag. Worked great. Didn't have to modify mags or bolt stop. Definitely throated longer than most PRC's but that has allowed me to squeeze some extra velocity out of it.

That's good to know!! In your buddies experience and yours, I could probably go either any magnum tikka? and if went 300 or 7mm probably just swap barrels? I have a line on a 700 proof barreled action but I like the idea of the tikka action I have never owned a tikka that didn't shoot!

I have a R700 6.5 SAUM and a Tikka 7 SAUM but from scratch in 6.5 i'd probably go PRC. Get a tikka long action magnum and the PRC should work in factory mags or you can get a HCR mag. SAUMs are fatter than PRCs and dont work in tikka 7RM/300WM mags. SAMMI PRC throats are long, actually longer than ideal for 140 berger hybrid type bullets but good for the ELDs and heavier monos.

He’ll open the bolt face and rechamber it for ya.

he’s reputable, fast and cheap. No brainer.

I handload so that part doesn't bother me much I can see my 280ai collecting dust or loaded with 162-168s in the near future.

Are the 300wm and the 300wsm the same mag with a spacer in the wsm?

No they're not, the wsm is lacking ribs that are in the win/rem long action mag. If you go prc you can use the long Magnum magazine, but to properly run a saum with good case head presentation, you need to use an aftermarket magazine. I took a 300 wsm magazine and milled put the rear block that shortens the inside length and installed a long action follower and it works, but not ideal case head presentation for the bolt to pick up.
