Tikka 7 SAUM build short or long action?
Buildings this for my wife for all of North America big game. Want to keep it compact and short.
I’ve already ordered a Tikka SA Ultralight Action and Carbon Fiber 18” 1-7 twist barrel, but still have time to change order.
I was going to run 180 ELD-M and 195 Elite Hunters.
Would love a folding chassis but magazines selection is slim.
Was thinking of a Peak 44 Blacktooth also if they could shorten length of pull to 12.5.
Any input other than negative would be highly appreciated 😂.

My wife has a tikka 7saum. Build it on a long action. Same action, different mags. No issues feeding and gives you lots of room for COAL.

It’s shooting 180s out of a 20” suppressed around 2750 fps. I’d drop to 162 eldms in your situation with the shorter barrel.

My wife and daughter have stolen this rifle. I don’t call it mine anymore. It shoots like a dream and recoil is super manageable.

Well as said already the actions are all the same length.

Get LA bolt stop, throat it long and get the most out of the case capacity for the heavier 7mm pills.

Did you mean “blacktooth” stock?

If so I’d say look for something that will make that gun more enjoyable to shoot.

I have a blacktooth and love it for its weight and shape as far as sporter style stocks go. But can’t imagine making a sub 7-8lb 7saum shootable with that paticular stock.

Obviously brakes and suppressors can change that, just my 2cents

Also curious though, why not just 7prc?

I want to keep it light as possible for mountain hunting, the 7 SAUM has less recoil and she wants the 18” barrel. I have a 7 PRC with 22” barrel already. Yes it will be suppressed that’s the reasoning behind the 18” barrel. She won’t be shooting over 500 yards. She was shooting my 300 WSM with 20” barrel weights 7.6lbs and shot it quite well but she is wanting something with less recoil. So I thought the 7 SAUM was a good choice. I’ve already started this build and don’t want to run down the rabbit hole of smaller calibers just adding that in there I know how these threads go.

I don’t care what other people shoot I’m not here to say that.

When reading what you were putting together it just seemed like you were going the long route to end up at a 7PRC.

Why not 7saum with 160 class offerings for sub 500 yards and mitigate a touch more recoil (162eldx/eldm, 168 VLD) just food for thought

I don’t have an issue at all with lighter bullets Sir. I’m just ignorant when it comes to Tikka actions never owned one. Recoil lug for one, seems they are different. Magazines for chassis seems there not many options, that why I was looking at a conventional light weight stock using the stock tikka magazine. Seems as if the long action tikka is the way to go for short mag cartridges you have plenty of room for longer coal. I don’t like half assing stuff so I’m wanting to get this right the first time, with some advice from people with more experience with tikka actions than I have. I always use Remington 700 clones because they’re like assholes everyone has one and everyone makes parts for them. I’m hoping I didn’t screw up going this route. I appreciate any input!!

A lot of people have built tikkas around saum cases on here with great success I don’t think it’s a bad platform at all.

Edit: it’s a great setup for long COAL in a saum case and tikka reliability

As someone else said Tikka only makes one action, there is no short and long action like an R700 pattern action. Also, not familiar with an “ultralight” version of a Tikka action.

Where are you looking at these?

Basically it’s a T3X that has been machined to take 4 oz out of the action, J&A calls it an Ultra light.

Ah ok. JA Outdoors, the copy cats.

Preferred Barrel Blanks
They do a lot of barrels and Tikka builds.
PBB is doing the barrel and installing the receiver. I was originally going with a Weatherby 307, J&A had them on sale for $599. But the short action magnum was on backorder it had already been 60 days. PBB called wanting to know when I was sending receiver they were ready to do my barrel. So called J&A they said they had know idea when they would be getting them in. So they had the Tikka in stock so I switched the build to Tikka. Called PBB they said that was fine never mentioned whether I should use short or long action. Since I have learned the only difference is the bolt stop far as the action. The bottom metal is different and since it comes with trigger and bottom metal I needed to switch from short to long action. I also wasn’t aware of the recoil lug setup, so long story short 🙄 I’m just trying to get some knowledge with tikka actions.
