Tikka 300 WSM….What bullet for Elk?

Strange, maybe the ttsx would better suite you.. the 168s like factory 3006&308 options have served me plenty well, everything I’ve hit, including elk don’t make it further than their momentum after point of impact. I use the 200lrx in my 300wm with stellar results.

Let me know how they shoot. I bought 200rds, mostly for the brass, but they shoot like garbage in the 2 rifles I tried them in.

They shot pretty good in my Tikka. Just under .75. I like to reload, but these might be the easy button. I just want to hear how they performed.

10 shots out of a new McGowen 18inch 300wsm barrel. I was worried until I shot some other ammo and reloads and got some good groups.

In 2020 we killed 3 bulls. Two with with Bergers the third was with a Barnes. None of the 3 made it more than a few steps. Difference was, what the bullets did on impact. The Barnes did what you’d expect. We recovered it. The one bull was taken with a 180gr classic hunter out of a 300 wm. The shot distance was 150yds, the bullet basically blew up inside the chest cavity. The lungs/heart were destroyed. My 168gr classic hunter in a 7 SAUM (2830 fps mv) on a 325 yd shot didn’t fragment as much. I think I remember a 49% weight retention. The Barnes was nearly 100% weight retention if I remember correctly.

For what it’s worth, I’m going back this year on the same hunt shooting 168gr VLDs in my 7 SAUM. I wouldn’t hesitate to use Bergers, TTSX, Accubonds or Hammers. All 4 are great options. Just be realistic with what you expect the bullet to do on impact. Good luck.

I've killed 2 Bull Elk and 1 Cow elk with my Tikka 300 WSM using the Barnes VOR-TX 165 TTSX. The round grouped just under MOA in my gun. The bullet seemed to be more impressive with blood trails on my 200+ yards shots than on my 35-yard shot.

You should take a look at the Berger 208 long range hybrid target. Has very good bc.

180 Gr Accubond. Have had really good luck with the Accubonds in my rifles.

I'm shooting a 300 WM and have gone through a couple of different rounds. So far my rifle likes the 180gr Trophy Bonded Tip the best. Easily shoots .25" groups at 100 and .5" to .625" groups at 200.
