I’m looking at buying a Tikka in 300 Win Mag for an Elk hunt this fall. I’m wondering what would be the best bang for my buck. Buying a Tikka Ember or buying one of the new Tikka lites with a threaded barrel and upgrading with an after market stock? If aftermarket which would you recommend. Looking to stay under $1400 total. Roughtech Ember near me is $1299 and the new Lites are $850.

$850 and just upgrade the pad to a limbsaver and throw on a vertical grip. My $.2
It’s really late to start putting a rifle together now! You should pick up the model you like and start getting range days in. I would do as suggested for this year and put money into ammo and range days to get familiar with the rifle.

Since you will do what you want anyway, I have a mesa precision on my 30 Nosler and I like it.

Thanks for the input. The hunt isn’t until November (late bull hunt) and I live next to the desert so I plan to get out and shoot a bunch before then.

I appreciate the input. I’m just worried because I’ve heard the cheaper Tikkas don’t take recoil very well so I was thinking of upgrading it to handle recoil better.

The Ember stock is just the regular stock with a cool paint job. The barrel profile is a little bit bigger, but not big enough to significantly change the recoil impulse.
A stock Tikka in 300WM is a handful. If you do decide to go with that cartridge, then my recommendation for a stock would be more than your budget allows and would put you out of the time-frame necessary (McMillan Mountain Tracker LR or Rokstock).

If you want a stock Tikka for elk hunting, my recommendation would be to get on in 308, 6.5 PRC, 270 Win, or 30-06, although even the 30-06 packs a punch. Get one of those with a Limbsaver recoil pad and a Vertical grip, shoot the heck out of it, and go hunt.

I'll get piled on here shortly if I'm wrong, but I believe the only difference in the Ember stock to a standard Lite is paint/texture. There are other small differences with the barreled action (fluting, bolt knobs, etc) but if the stock is your concern I'd absolutely go with a Lite.

If the barrel length and thread works for you, just swap to the aftermarket stock of your liking. If not you can have a competent smith cut and thread shorter. As mentioned above, you can swap to a vertical grip and add a limbsaver, Tikkas in large magnums are pretty harsh with recoil. Swapping the stock can help mitigate some of that. You'll get a lot of love for the Rokstock on here (for good reason) though you might be pushing your luck to receive one and have time to practice with it before November. To stay in your budget of around $1400 you could also look at the Stockys VG 2, or the Peak44 Bastion (my preferrence).

I have the above set up on a 19in tikka 300 and the felt recoil isn’t much more noticeable than my smaller calibers. I do have a muzzlebreak which is great and it’s a lot of energy and commotion but the felt recoil is pretty minor.

I do have a muzzle break so if the recoil is a bit much I can just throw that on. Plus I plan on getting a limb saver and a vertical grip so that should help some as well.

Yeh maybe I’ll deal with the standard stock this year and see how it goes and then upgrade in the future if needed.

For some reason I thought the stock on the roughtech was beefier so that’s why I leaned that way but if it’s the same then I don’t care about the paint job so I would just save the money.
