Tikka 243 1in8

Thanks MT. Since Tikka doesn’t offer a 6CM, I’m thinking about getting the 243 and would like to shoot the heavier bullets.

I like mine so far, I think the biggest advantages a 6mm creedmoor would have is you could buy 108 eldm loaded in factory ammo and when reloading you would not have to trim brass as often.

My .243 8 twist would run out of throat before it runs out of mag length when loading the 108 eldm or the 105 bthp. YMMV

I had seen it mentioned a few times that some Tikka throats were short and 108s had to be seated too far into the case.

Here is what mine looks like with the 108 eldm. Seated deeper than I like as well but it shoots great and I’m getting the velocity I want. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

108s hit the rifling Just beyond mag length. I don’t think you are giving up much if any powder capacity with the bullet seated this way. I’m using h4350 which is not compressed so it does not matter anyway

Loaded and ready for testing. I hope Long Rifle wins, but I suspect imr4350 is gonna claim the title. Curious to see if Hunter does better with heavies, because it didn’t cater to lights. All 108 eldm’s IMG_4952.jpegIMG_4954.jpegIMG_4955.jpeg

I didn’t get the speed I wanted out of Shooters World Long Rifle, but it certainly groups! Imr4350 and Superformance gave good speeds for a 16.5” barrel. I expected more speed out of Hunter.

My 95gr imr4350 load out of a 18.5” barrel is 2,995fps.

Even in the mid 2500’s with SWLR it’s a 400y combination.

Not sure if I’m done with powders yet. Might try H1000 since it’s been suggested, if I can find some. Otherwise I’m pretty pleased with how the tikka shot, and how SWLR and the 108’s got along.

Hyatt Guns in Charlotte had a 1:8 T3x 243 Compact in stock so I picked one up on Wednesday.
Finding an accurate 108 ELD-M came pretty easily. The ELD touched the lands at 2.828” and I set the COAL at 2.800”. At 2.820 it just fits in the M magazine but functions perfectly.
I ended up with 44.0gr. of H4831SC with a velocity average of 2722 fps. Accuracy is very good out to 400 yds but I have a little tweaking to do.

I happened to stop in a Gunshop on a trip nearby and score 8lbs of h4831sc for $374 out the door. I haven’t seen it that cheap anywhere lately. Time to test that 44-45gr window loading some 108eldm’s out to 2.800”. Hornady manual claims 47.4gr is the top out, hodgdon claims 44.7gr. GRT says 45.5 is about the limit.

I hit pressure at 46.0 on once fired star line brass.
