They've been bad here, not sure if this heavier winter we are still having will have any affect on them this spring. Family member has Lyme's and it's not pretty.

We always have to take Doxycycline when we are in Iraq/Afghanistan...or really any shit hole that has a high mosquito population. I have never heard it being used as a preemptive for ticks, but the logic makes sense. So I guess that is good news, as I have a permanent Rx for Doxycycline, I just need to get it filled before my next trip.

Ok...thanks for clarifying. When we are overseas they have us popping it like candy everyday regardless if we are bitten or not. It is suppose to preempt the possibility of coming down with malaria.

It's just their line of clothing treated with Permethrin, they just claim it's "Bonded to the fibers" and will last longer. Probably easier to pick the gear you like - and treat it yourself.

Basically - it's an antibiotic used for a lot of different things. Apparently prevention of malaria is one of them.

My guess is you don't want to be taking it unless something warrants it - as there are side effects and potential negatives.

In 2009 I contracted ehrlichiosis from a tick. The problem was I didn't know or believe I was really sick. I suffered for weeks and kept putting it off as this or that. Then I went on a far-away hunt and became more acutely ill in camp. I was more or less nonfunctional for a couple days. My first aid kit bailed me out. I always carry a Z-Pack (azithromycin dose pack) and I began it as soon as my illness intensified. It worked and it saved my hunt. The diagnosis of ehrlichiosis came later when I saw my doc and described everything in detail. I take ticks very seriously and use as much prevention as possible. Usually my plan is to treat clothes with permethrin and let dry. Tuck pants in boot tops and duct tape tops of boots. Apply deet spray to boots, pants and waistline. If I follow this regimen I basically never find a tick or get a chigger bite.

Yep....the age old debate we have each deployment. All of our commies are treated with permitherin, we are issued deet, but we are still directed (not asked) to take our daily doxy.

Doxy can eat you guts big time...... experience talking here. When the Doctor gives you a prescription for Doxy and then gives you a companion prescription for Acidophilous and tells you to eat lots of yogurt. Sure messes up my stomach by the end of the first week taking it but it does seem to knock down the effects of Lyme disease.

I like to wear light colored pants. I work for a land surveyor. Anything I walk through low brush, I stop on the other side and pick ticks. Faded out light colored carharts make them very easy to spot.

Hasn't Doxy been found to cause mental issues (violent dreams, PTSD symptoms)? I thought I read something about that in the American Legion Magazine, or online somewhere.

Im not sure it's ever been proven to have a direct linkage, but I know it has been claimed to mess with people's dreams. The running joke is that "im living the dream, too bad im on doxy"

i recently treated my clothes with permethrin. yesterday my buddy found a tick on his hand so we put it on the sleeve of my shirt to see what would happen. within 5 mintues it was dead. i was impressed to say the least. this was the first time i've come home from that place without finding a tick on me. mosquitoes only seemed to tolerate brief contact before flying away.

This stuff really works. I've done that test a few times and I'm a believer now.
I buy it at Tractor supply and dilute it to have and end product that it 1/2% strength.
Dug the first of the year out yesterday, so I guess it's time to start treating the cloths. Seems as soon as the snow melts and temps raise they come out in force!
