Hi There

I am just putting in my paperwork over the next few months to my local force for firearms to cover my needs
on my land permissions for hunting, pest control and guided deer/hog hunting.

Due to being limited on not reloading (yet), ammo availability plus cost and my needs I am looking at 3 rifle cartridges to cover for all these
what do you think of the below or if you could suggest any others ?

22 WMR/Mag Rimfire for my small land permissions like up to 20 acres, close to farm buildings/livestock and houses covering varmints and foxes

22-250 Remington for my larger places/open areas covering varmints, foxes and small deer plus roe deer in Scotland.

270 Winchester for all of my deer stalking I have red deer and roe deer on my own grounds 2 land permissions, plus guided deer stalking Sika/Fallow/Highland Red and Boar/Hog hunting.

was just wondering if I should opt for 308 or 30-06 for the above, shot both of these in the past and did well with both too

Is there any reason that you wouldn't want a 6mm / .243 instead of the 270? I've taken a few stags and a roe deer with a suppressed 243 in the UK and had no complaints about the cartridge's performance (also a pleasure to shoot). You could use 58 or 64gr bullet for your second use case and a 100 or 110 gr for your third bucket.

it is a very nice round to shoot shot my first roe deer in 243 with 85gr sierra bthp years ago, had a couple some years back when I was last shooting, sako A7 & A7 roughtech they loved 90/100 gr softpoints. It does suit UK lowland species of deer up to fallow but red and sika deer not so much plus not hog legal here either

With the whole monolithic thing happening here by 2029, 243 and above + all these need to be copper/non lead, all 243's will be hard to shift then. I am just thinking purely for the future as well with 270 non lead works v well.

highland red* i meant lol, the other point is on my own land permission I need the red & roe deer DRT as the woods they all come from I don't have permission to venture into.

I would have a 243 PVHunter purely for roe/small deer if I could again, but as costs are what they are in the UK for rifles and ammo plus the local forces view favorably person with one rifle cartridge to do all mindset.

the only contenders really are 270, 308, 30-06
