Thoughts on one rifle?

A guy could, but it would be a short list of cartridges (6ARC, 22ARC, 6GT, 6.5CM, .308 would be my short list of the top of my head) to allow low cost, long barrel life, high volume practice and desired terminal performance at my desired ranges.

Much better would be a .223 trainer/backup and a 6CM/.243/22CM/.22-250 hunting rifle for better danger space, wind, and extended range without the barrel life concerns that come with a "one rifle" setup.

I can't think of a single reason to have only one gun. Bottom line is I love guns and shooting.

I love to hunt and do so more than most. Big game or small I hunt it all. I shoot all year and real barrel regularly. Jmo

I like the concept of have one rifle and shoot it a ton and know it super well. While I own a number of rifles my 270 had really been my go to for years. I recently bought a 6.5cm to fill that role, though I also am picking up an identical 223 that I will configure as an exact match (same rings, optics, everything). Though the more I read the 223 thread the more I think it might just be able to be THE rifle.

In the end I think 2 guns for redundancy makes sense and a 2nd caliber with different but overlapping use case also makes sense. I really could imagine just having 2.

Im all for it, but I cheat. I've decided to end my hunting days after 70 years bouncing all over everything from action to caliber, and scopes in every flavor, to deciding with what years I have left, just one! One rifle, and one scope, but I just have to have 2 cartridges.

I'm building the LA stainless 700 Remington with a Peak44 Blackrock stock, but it will have 2 #4 contour barrels. One for a 22" 338-06 AI, and one for a 24" 257 Roberts AI. If I am going to hunt anything from Coyote to Dangerous game, and this setup won't do it, I spent 70 years learning nothing!

Now that's just for big game right? I mean, I need my truck gun, my walk around gun, my long range gun, and the others for Varmint plinking and target, right?

Don't think I could have just one for everything, I just aint giving up all my habits, just the bad ones,,,,,

I'm pretty much in the Elk, deer , antelope and of course pigs. Maybe black bear. I figure one and done will work for those critters. No Grizzly's here LOL. And of course I'm talking one rifle for hunting, not shooting or plinking.

280AI - 30-06 - 300 WSM
It would be hard to beat any of these three for the one cartridge question but rifle would be a little harder. I like the Winchester Model 70's but sure wish they were made here in the USA again. I really like the Ruger Model 77 Hawkeye and Hunter rifles. Good solid rifles. Weatherby is a good all American rifle maker that builds a nice rifle. It's hard to beat a Sako or a Tikka either.

I love my Ruger 1B's with one being in 6mm Remington and the other one in 30-06. Love shooting, carrying, and hunting with these rifles. Both are exceptionally accurate also. I've never felt compromised carrying one. I also love the 280AI I had made from a Winchester Model 70 Classic Sporter rifle. It was a 270 until my gunsmith worked his magic on it. It's just a fantastic rifle and cartridge combination. Oh so many choices.
