Thoughts on 3d?

They vary quite a lot. It can be expensive if the shops are long and you miss/lose the arrow, or if they are shooting through tight brushy windows and you hit the brush.

If you haven't shot very much, you might try a paper target course. They have more room for error.

You could always just visit a range and ask to walk through with a group.

3-D Ranges are all fun and games until some John Dudley wannabe starts shooting from way behind the stakes and over/past two trails.

They're great practice for hunting. Shoot them without a range finder to work on hour distance judging skills. As far as the scoring rings go, it's really about picking a spot. Find the 12 and do your best to hit it. Doesn't matter if it's not the best kill shot. It can also be fun ribbing your shooting group when they duff a shot

If you show up to casually shoot, you won’t get much out of it.
I see it all the time. People show up and say “I just hope I hit all the targets.”
Two years later, they’re still below average.
Show up, keep score, analyze every shot and what went wrong, and you will improve the next time.

I really enjoy shooting 3d courses.
I take a range finder, but estimate the target range first for practice.
I also keep 2 scores: first is the points, and then more importantly, whether I think it would be a kill shot or not.

I enjoy any 3d shoot, but the most fun is with friends, and we scored actual kill shots 10 and non vital hits zero! Of course razzed each other the whole time!

Shooting for score is fun but I find most guys shooting straight up target rigs. It is fun to beat them with a hunting bow and no lens on your sight or peep though!
