Thoughts on 3d?

They’re fun, but most of all they help you get reps in on different sized targets. It’s easy to shoot at the range or in the back yard but my local 3D shoot does anywhere from 25-30 different 3D animal targets of multiple species and it just helps translate over to hunting with targets being set at all different types of ranges (26,43,67 yards etc) and in different terrain (uphill, downhill, straight through thickets) it’s a lot of fun meeting like minded archers and hunters and it’s a great resource to use to help get ready for the season. Good luck!

If you go and shoot with some decent shooters you will probably learn a few things.

Depending on the course, you will figure out if your axis's are all correct, if you hold your bubble correctly on a steep hill, and what fatigue will do to you at the end of the day.

I love 3D. You’re missing out if you haven’t been to one. I try to go to as many as I can each year. Great practice for hunting and just plain fun to get out and shoot at different targets at various distances and angles. Helps make you more confident in the field. It’s also good meeting other like minded guys and seeing what equipment they’re using. Fun to bring the kid along too

Here’s a controversial thought…. The kill zones on 3D targets are consistently too far back on the animal, and I’m convinced it trains shooters to gut shoot, or nearly gut shoot animals when they hunt.

Too high on deer, but front to back seems OK to me.

you have to be careful with the kids shooting too. Had a buddy put a round dot on the middle of a deer target(not vitals) while they were practicing crossbow. come rifle season his daughter shot a buck too far back(right where the dot on the deer target was placed for practice)

Yep it’s a real thing. I’ve watched Bow hunters shoot pigs, specifically, right where the 12 ring is which is way too far back.

I’ll add to the controversy as someone who puts the 3D shoots on at my club (with help)
I totally agree and have zero interest in keeping scores based on the scoring rings. I’m only interested in kill shot or no kill shot.
We set the targets up in real hunting situations and the scoring rings are almost never the best kill shot.
I love getting on the 3D trail and testing myself but I have a hard time getting into the 3D scene. There’s a million categories and a good chunk of the trad guys are really weird, not all of them though, but there’s a good chunk than are.

I've noticed this also. I still just aim for my spot if I'm not shooting for score.

Good point, we sometimes do the same at our club.

When I set up my own animals and walk around taking shots from different angles, I don't worry so much about the scoring rings- it's kill or no kill.

I look at it this way; Its all about picking a spot. If the animal is turned putting the scoring rings in the wrong spot for a kill, it's still teaching you to pick a spot. You're score reflects how good of a shot you are no matter how they have the animal setup. If you can shoot a spot with the animal angled, then you can pick the right spot on a real animal.

I love 3D for what it is. I don’t view it as hunting practice. I don’t view the scoring rings as vitals. It’s just a way for me to get in reps in new terrain and with targets I didn’t set up myself.

It’s like any shooting event. A game.

If you so choose the added pressure of shooting for score and being competitive, especially with friends who are as good or better, can definitely help for hunting.

As far as the scoring rings, I did prefer the wire rings on the Critter Factory targets since those could be placed in a different spot depending on the shot angle. Plus there was no question if you were in or out of the ring. The donated antlers that would get added where always pretty cool but I can’t remember the last time I saw a Critter Factory target though.

I absolutely love 3-D and the TAC is the best event in my opinion for testing your gear and fitness. The Rhinehart R-100 is also a must.

I enjoy shooting 3d. It’s nice to get out and shoot at something other then a bag a or a block every once in a while.
