Anyone affected by this? So important to stock goods for situations like this. Rather have it and not need it then need it and not have it.. I hope all the Roksliders who are in this area are prepared if there are any. Sad situation.

Shtf,
I live 120 miles north of there and there is not a case of water from here to there.. You are right about being prepared, I hope everybody down there is OK..

Would our Water Filters Sawyer MSR Kaytaden make the water safe to use? I was thinking it wouldnt. I dont think the filters are setup for chemical cleaning I could be wrong. Any input?

Poser that sucks. hope they stay safe. I can see crap going south fast with no clean drinking water. Up here in Colorado we got Mnt run off so if a spill ever happened we could head for the hills for water but I dont think there is much in the way of snow out there in WV is there? Maybe Im wrong.

I do not believe they are set up to remove toxins such as this, I don't believe the steri pens would either. Although drinking tainted water with this particular chemical in I would just make you sick, not kill you.

Best way I could put it is try and filter a Pepsi and ask for it to come out clear, the physical properties of the chemical are not large enough to be caught by the filter.

That chemical requires activated carbon and probably a charged clay. Then a final polish with O-zone contact.

Our backpacking filters are mostly a particulate filter and not chemical.

The chemical involved is also a respiratory irritant. This info was not immediately released. A family friend from Charelston, WV had an asthma attack on her daily run. The attack was directly related to lung irritation from the chemical. She and her family are now here in VA visiting family. They are lucky to be in a situation where they could leave the area.

Agreed that the filter would not be of any use down stream. Just go up the elk river and the filter would be fine just like any where else. The elk river has a decent flow to it.

Can't believe I missed this thread. I am right in the middle of the affected area and honestly it has been little more than an inconvenience. The response from FEMA, the national guard, local civic and church groups and just decent citizens was amazing. All of the water is back on and there is only a slight odor. I'm not trying to downplay the experience others have had but anyone with a car could get unlimited potable and bottled water for almost two weeks. My family and I were fortunate that nearby relatives had good water and we could bathe and wash clothes.....2 cents

what? another media fueled event? well it still was bad and i look at some of the preppers in a new light. need to be at least somewhat prepared for this and natural disasters. going through a winter storm watch/warning now with a full pantry fueled generator extra drinking water and propane stoves at the ready. here in se ga with just the threat of snow/freezing rain all schools were closed and even my eye doc called and canceled todays appointment.

What you are talking of isn't a "prepper" thing, just good common sense :) Just that sometimes we need a reminder. First time the power flickers here in the fall is my reminder to check my generator & make sure the oil is fresh, it's fueled, & there is 15gal of extra fuel on hand. Check the water bottle pile & we are ready!
The rest of the pantry isn'tso much of an issue as the freezer is usually full of salmon & if I'm lucky some moose.

Not really, it has been a real serious situation for some, the elderly, home bound and small business owners (especially restaurants) that lost revenue. However, having lost power for nearly a week last year and now this, give me no water any time. This event was roughly a 50 mile radius and and within the affected area there were a couple water grids that were clean. To be sure the media has added some hype but the tidal wave of law suits has made it appear like a catastrophe. I'm just very proud of neighbors and yes even government agencies, my family and I treated it like a week long picnic, paper plates, plastic cutlery, paper towels baby wipes etc... If we lived the third world somewhere I'm sure this could have been very tragic. No victims in my household.

I never heard about this until I went to Charlston this last week for work. I heard about some of the good efforts by everyone to take care of others. There is always going to be the "they should have done better".

For anybody from that area, I am the fabricator of those big gray bulkheads that arrived on rail cars a few weeks ago, and have been loaded on a barge at Amherst. These are now at their final home at Winfield Dam. I really enjoyed the cold!!
