Thinking too much? - Vortex Razor HD or Swarovski SLC 10x42

Go back to S&S archery and insert discount code Rokslide. Does that make your decision easier?

Also if you ever have to sell, good luck getting 60% of what you paid for the vortex while the swaros will bring close to what you’ll pay with the 10% discount off the sale price.

I bought a used pair of SLC 10x42 about 10 years ago. I’ve never regretted it. Could sell them today for about $250 less than what I paid for them. $250 for 10 years of use, I’ll take that.

Pretty sure he isn’t asking about UHDs. Also pretty sure razors (not UHDs) are in China (picture from 20 day old pair I got).

Made in china is an issue for me...

My Mark 1 eyeballs are now nearing 59 years old...8x42s or 10x42s better for occasional hunting out west; most hunting in TX?
I hunt in Alaska and use some monarch 7s in 8x42. My vortex 10x48s get loaned out and I just picked up a pair of Swarovski in 8x20 or 8x28 though I might sell them. I like the light gathering of the 42s over the 20 and I really like my monarchs.
Of most your hunting will be sound in Texas and your range isn’t that far, I’d stick with the 8s.
I do, mainly because I hunt out of a boat a lot.

I would (and did) buy the Swarovskis. It is one thing to look at them side by side in the store, but I will guaranty you that 10 years down the road the Swarovskis will look better, be more durable (they have a great warranty but you will likely not need to use it, which can't be said of the Vortex) and will be worth much more from a resale perspective. I don't go high end on all my equipment just for the sake of it, but over the past 20+ years with Swarovski binos and spotters I would not buy another brand.

I can’t give you a direct comparison in binos but I can on spotter.

Bought a used pair of viper binos, used for a season then went straight to SLCs...gain tons of clarity and light gathering in darker hours, definitely worth it to me.

Goth a razor 85mm spotter, the older version. Didn’t use it out west but used it a lot at the rifle range. It bugged the hell out of me that the clarity of seeing my groups just wasn’t perfect. I finally talked myself into the Swarovski atx. Did I spend a ton , yes, but now I can easily see my groups and have the ability to add different lenses

With bow hunting I m not sure if I really gained anything in my limited experience out west and only with bow. But as my eyes get older the added clarity and light gathering may prove its worth.

If you have a inclination now for Swarovski, just skip the in between and cry once

For every minute closer to dark, those swaros will be exponentially worth every penny. I've yet to see a big buck wandering around in the middle of the day...

I bit the bullet and got SLC hds to tripod mount and a 65mm ATX. It makes me sick to think about all the animals I have missed seeing before I had this setup. This season specifically, I sat next to a hunting buddy behind the glass for many many hours. He has a pro deal on vortex, and has their razor binos and their spotter. He has great eyes, and is an excellent spotter. By the end of the season, he was ready to shell out. I'll leave it at that...

Swarovski has an underrated, great warranty as well, they just don't advertise it like Vortex. I had to get the peep sight on my ATS replaced after I broke it off (my fault) which was no charge. I also ordered replacement eyecups for my SLC 10x42 and they shipped those at no charge. I noticed my SLCs are quite a bit better than my buddies Razors.

You can get NIB razors for around $700 if you’re patient.

I have both razor and SLC. I love them both and would be happy with either. I use the razors more simply because I leave them in the truck since they cost less to replace incase someone steals them.

SLC are better, but I find lots of animals with my razors and have never gotten eye strain doing so. In my opinion, higher quality glass becomes more important the higher you go in magnification. In an 8x42 there’s not a huge difference between razors and alpha glass, when you get up to 15x or greater it makes a bigger difference.

I think that's completely fair. I owned a pair of MIJ razors for a while. I never fell in love with them, but they never let me down either.
