Thinking about buying a sxs for hunting. Can Am Max Defender or Polaris Xpedition

Noting wrong with the ride of the Pioneers I've been in. No idea what vids you're watching. Ours came with adjustable fox shocks. In northern Az, my first time in one, going across softball sized rocks, I couldn't believe how well it rode.
I guess you have the one most expensive model out of 16 different Pioneer models that comes with decent shocks. That's great and I'm sure you love it. But I doubt it is representative of the rest of the lineup. Hondas have ALWAYS been more rough and utilitarian than other manufacturers by design to focus on reliability. That's just how they build stuff.

Comparing the ride on factory shocks to the Fox QS-3's that are on the LE models isn't even close. I have a '21 Deluxe and the ride is worse in that than my Yamaha Rhino. Like I said I love my Pioneer, but they are at least 10 years behind the other brands.

I guess it depends on your location but I wanted a roof and windshield but still want to feel like I am outside. I hunt in Alabama so it can be cold and wet but but still mild compared to many places.

In my experience, if you have a front windshield, you better have a rear windshield also. Unless you just love dust, mud, and rain all over the back of your neck and head from the negative pressure behind the front windshield.

But front and rear windshields plus a roof cut a LOT of the wind and cold for a lot of conditions, especially if you have half doors.

Thx for the feedback on the Xpedition. Watched a video and it appears that the suspension is definitely better then the can am defender. Seems like a lot of other issues going on with Polaris though.

Hunted with an outfitter in Colorado past 3 years. He ran Rangers, but said he couldn't keep them out of the dealers for repairs. He uses them year round, not just hunting season.

He dumped all the Rangers and bought a fleet of Defenders HD10, 4 and 6 wheelers. He said problem solved. Other than routine maint., the Defenders are always working.

I was so impressed with the Defenders when I was out there, I bought one.

Defender HD10 Limited.

I added a front light bar, rear winch and cube lights. Days of me picking up a deer and loading it up are over. First because it's really high off the ground, second, 4 back surgeries.

Looks like I fell into a deal on a used low hour/mile Polaris XP1000 Crew Northstar. Hoping for good luck with it, the primary thing that goes out on them seems to be the drive belt which is a 30 minute fix and $100 bucks. I really was wanting the Honda 1000-5 but for pretty much the same price I ended up with a 6 seater with heat/ac. Tough to turn that down.

How long have you had it? I'm in the market for my first sxs after finally admitting my Tacoma just isn't as capable/fast.

I had crossed the defender off my list but you have me intrigued. I've narrowed it down to Kawasaki Ridge, Rmax/Wolverine, P1000 right now..

Bought it in 23.

thing is awesome .

Also have a 2014 Kawi Teryx that has been bulletproof . Gave it to my son when I bought the Defender.

Can't go wrong with a kawi either.

Ridge wasn't out yet when I bought the defender

I have a new 24 Kawasaki Ridge HVAC that I really like. It has windshields that keep the dust off of you. It has plenty of power with a 3 year warranty and A/C. Used the A/C this afternoon it was great.

I like my Defender pro xt, Have owned Honda and Polaris. I use them for utility more than go fast machines. Seat is a little to upright other than that no complaints It's a 2020. Goes where I need it to. AZ has some nasty country and it has handled all of it so far.

My dad and I both have Polaris Rangers and they have been bulletproof. Farm use, elk hunting, and utility use. Dad trail rides a lot with a group and they had all brands. They all drive Polaris now and are happier for whatever that is worth. Good and bad with every brand. Good luck in your search. Belt drive is a non-issue in my mind.

I searched but no results for "insurance " in this thread.

If it hasn't been mentioned, get some insurance quotes. You might be shocked.

Is it common for folks to get insurance on their offroad machines?

Is it common for folks to get insurance on their offroad machines?

It's generally required if you are going to operate on any public road .
And full coverage is required if you finance a new machine.

I got into an....incident while riding my paid for, non-insured atv with a very expensive and insured utv, on a trail. Insurance companies are ruthless. That was my awakening to, "wait, people insure these? And they apply fault like a car?"

You almost need to treat it like an auto unless it's paid for, never leaves your private property, and, is never around machines with insurance.

4 pages of this, nope, read some of the first, didn't go farther. You want the highlights, Can Am, I hunt and work in mine a lot here in Alabama. It's quiet. I've gotten a lot of positive reviews from our club members about the smoothness and quietness of this machine.

SXS, I've owned a Can Am Defender 10 Max, that's the one with the second row of seats, since 2020, before Covid, yep bought in January, Covid hit March. I love that thing! I tested Polaris, Honda, and Yamaha, I'm not going into why I didn't go the other routes. I will if you PM me. The Can Am, Honda and Yamaha were all at the same dealer at the same two (yeah different days) test drives, so it wasn't the dealer.

The Can Am is quiet, rides well, handles any trail or deep gumbo mud we've had it on, handles a bunch of passengers. I use it hunting about close to 70-80 days a year just hunting, then you have off season work, then work around the land, ie., I use that thing a lot. I've had to replace the fuel pump, once, I run nonethanol gas exclusively, you don't have to, I do. I've replaced the two spark plugs, the battery and changed the oil. I'm not hard on my equipment, I buy what I want, then I make it last. My truck will be 28 years old on November 11. Take care of equipment, they will take care of you.

It has plenty of power, trust me! 1000cc is plenty for this big vehicle, and that is my only complaint. I need a smaller one for deer hunting so I can get through the woods to a deer. Shoot fire, I hate dragging a deer. I have had to call a buddy that is hunting too, more often, had to drive back to camp, get on one of the 4wheelers left there, and go get a deer out of some place "I just had to hunt." Did I mention I hate dragging a deer? I hate dragging one up hill worse! Now that thing is awesome on work days, most every day, I love it. You get in it, crank it up, let it warm up, go!!!!

My suggestion, buy two --- a very small one, very small one, can get through the woods better. That small one can't haul feed, fertilizer, lime, seed, all kinds of tools, the way that Can Am can. I know what I'm talking about, a buddy has one, that small bed can barely handle a deer, much less all the equipment I keep in one.

I keep in it at all times, a tool bag in the underseat box and a machete beside me, plus a charger and cables for the phone. In the bed, a large tool box, a half gallon bucket of screws and nails, a 5 gallon bucket of straps/bug dope/foam spray/wasp spray/rope/ratchet straps/etc., a milk crate filled with gallons of water (3-4), a bush axe, sledge hammer, shovel, a small mini shovel, T posts and post driver. In the back seat, a large carrier for game cameras, batteries, extra antennas, zip ties, bungees, more rope, extra sd cards, microfiber towels, extra gloves, extra orange hat, boxes of 2 & 3" screws, drill, you get the picture. I work, the club doesn't have to tell me about work days, I go on them, but there is so much more to be done for a hunting club, I'm prepared.

One thing I left out, my double bladed axe, I've carried that thing with me since 1978 when I started in the logging woods at 13. That axe and I became good friends that summer cutting off knots and limbs on the loading ground while measuring. Riding trails, you may not always have a chainsaw, between the bush axe, the machete, and the double blade, there isn't much that's going to stop me.
