Well, I learned a few things today while attempting to neck size primed (bought it that way) 28 Nos brass in a FL die. I figured I'd share my experience.

1. Don't try and cheat the system. CAUTIOUSLY deprime the brass, properly lube the case and size accordingly, then reseat the primers. Stuck cases suck. Primed stuck cases suck even worse.

2. If you've never seen a magnum primer go off, watch a video, or SAFELY figure things out for yourself. You will have a new respect for primers. If you've read that they toss a little spark through the flash hole, or you've used musket caps on your inline muzzleloader before, not the same. They are violent little devils.

I’m curious as to why you were trying to neck size them in the first place.
They were factory ammo that someone pulled, and some are actually 30 Nos that I need to neck down. I'm not wasting powder and projectiles on inconsistent neck tension.

Imperial sizing die wax next time, and they won't stick. If they do stick, spray some lube inside the case, this will deactivate the primer.

I've just removed the de-priming rod before when reloading pre-primed cases.
I had it ran up in the die so it didn't push the primer out and I could still expand the neck. It wouldn't have mattered anyway.

I usually use lanolin/alcohol mix, but I was trying to cheat the system and just smear a little RCBS lube on by hand, but I made too coarse of an adjustment and stuck it good. Lesson learned.

It looks like it is removed in the pictures.

He said this, which led me to believe he was trying to de-prime them and one went off:

CAUTIOUSLY deprime the brass,

But now the OP has clarified:

So how exactly did the primer detonate?

Gotcha. Did the primer rupture or did the flame all go out of the other end? Just curious.
That's the punctured cup sitting on the end of the punch in the picture. It honestly scared the shit out of me, was way more intense of a pop than I ever expected out of something that small.

ADG is great for my 28 Nos. I just wish someone would make 26 Nos brass
I'm gonna run with this for now and see what happens since I went through the trouble of uniforming it all, but I'll probably end up buying some Peterson. I've had great results with Peterson in other rifles.
