About a decade ago when I was getting into handguns I bought a drop leg holster, thinking they were cool. No matter what I tried, I couldn’t like it. I wanted to. I had invested my own money into it and it wasn’t cheap.
When I joined the military I was issued one. Again, I tried to make it work. I hate spending my own money if the issued item does the job. I ended up ordering a Safariland belt holster with a drop adapter shipped to Iraq and never looked back.

Things I hated about them:
Longer reach to the gun
Inconsistent draw due to holster shifting or leg position, the gun is a moving target
Running with three pounds bouncing on your leg
Chafing/comfort
Frigging straps and buckles everywhere

A good belt holster fixed all of the above.

You got me on the running thing for sure! I don't spend a lot of time running the mountains so I don't worry about it, but it does get a bit floppy when I run.

G Code. Their RTS system is superior to the safari land, lighter and less bulky. Plus you can throw the little mounting rings all over the place. The Molle Mount makes it easy to move your holster from your belt to your pack belt in a snap. But yeah don’t get a thigh rig unless you’re sitting in a car all day, those things suck to maneuver with. Mid drop with a thigh strap.

I've gotta throw some props to the GFI Micro Aggression panel with Ronin holster. I run one of these with a S&W 329PD and absolutely love the setup. It drops it down just enough to be out of the way of my pack band but isn't a full drop leg. There is absolutely no reaching for the gun as it's naturally right there when I put my hand down. It has one strap that rides near your nuts, but I never had an issue with it in the least, and my nuts take up quite a bit of real estate in my pants.

Yeah, I'm with you, I'm not sure what these anti thigh holster guys are smoking. I LOVE mine and it's just a cheapo blackhawk thigh holster. I have never gotten a hotspot from the straps, I don't find it awkward in any way, and it doesn't fatigue my right leg any more than my left.

I'm thinking there are some folks who are either using holsters that are not adjusted correctly, or they aren't talking from personal experience and are going off "internet wisdom".
We were issued those things on our Iraq deployments. Spend enough time in the desert walking around in 120deg heat wearing a thigh rig and get back to me on how much you love it. We all had holsters sent from family to replace that garbage. It isn't "internet wisdom" it's coming from people who lived and breathed daily with those things. Drop holsters are for posers and swat teams. Oh, and airsofters.

Or I'll just use it in the mountains (never been 120 degrees where I hunt, fyi) because it's the best system for me... but you know, whatever.

I know this is an internet forum so this is going to come as a shock, but everyone is not the same, we don't all hunt the same way or in the same places. You can throw all the insults you want my way because I have a different preference in how I carry but I think blanket statements like a lot of you are making are pretty silly.

You do you at full speed, no one is stopping you. Just better systems for carrying sidearms than a drop holster.

Well I'll add to the been there done that tried a thigh holster group. It all seems like it would be great till you try it and realize how much it is not. Like one said I guess you need to try it yourself and do you. Planning to get a kenai chest holder myself this year.

Drop leg holsters might not be the way to go. If you have to do anything hiking you'll hate a drop leg holster. In the Army I had to use one on a few ops, I hated it.

For hunting, I think a chest holster or attaching a pistol to your pack belt is the way to go. I personally run a G43 behind my bino harness with a Raven Concealment Vanguard when I bow hunt.

Best of luck find what works for you!

I ran the Hill People Gear chest rig for a week in Montana during archery season. Worn in conjunction with a mystery ranch metcalf with total comfort. Took off the pack throughout the day, but never took the chest rig off as it had my bear protection and survival gear. Pretty fast draw also if you rig up a holster properly.
