Lot's of guys wear lots of different boots here so I thought I'd ask....

I'm looking for a pair of boots with thicker leather, uninsulated (spring/summer/early fall wear), preferably with a rubber rand. The reason for the thicker leather and rand request is for help with turning a snake bite. Coyote hunting, scouting, hiking, and summer work on the farm I generally wear a snake guard gaiter that I have faith in but it leaves a fair bit of the foot uncovered. Most of the bites I've heard of around here are on the foot, usually an unseen snake that was stepped on. Mainly copperheads on my place, mainly rattlesnakes where I hunt/scout/hike. I've killed a lot of them the last several years. I haven't stepped on one yet but I've been within a foot before seeing them multiple times.

I have a pair of rubber snake proof boots but I hate wearing them because of the heat and slipping. Boot description said 70 degrees and below, which it's not when I need them. The last few years I've been wearing loggers with the snake gaiters. The loggers are wearing thin and I'll be needing new boots soon. I'd prefer something lighter and with less heel but will go back with loggers if nothing else seems as good...I did see some low heel loggers.

Kennetrek's Hardscrabble Hiker is a possibility. They list the leather as 2.8mm but I really don't know what most others are. I need a wide fit. I'm open to suggestions and appreciate your input.

I wish more people made non-water proof snake boots. So they wouldn’t be so damn hot.

I wear Hanwag Yukon or Ancash II LL, and I’ll use cheap snake gaiters from Foreverlast, if I have to hike aways

Check out Jim Green boots. I have barefoot ranger for every day and razorbacks (thick leather). I would prob prefer wedge sole on the razorbacks.

Hello,

I just sent you a DM if you would like to talk.

I am in the exact boat as you are. Live in East Texas and looking for a thicker leather boot and wear snake gaiters. I have narrowed it down to either Hoffman Explorer 8" or the light. With me being in East Texas worried about how hot an 8" boot would but snake protection is probably more important.

Another option are the premium Jim Green boots such as the Bronco or Numzaan, leather lined for a total of 3.6-3.8mm thickness for those that don’t need a mountain boot. Trooper is taller if a 6 inch boot isnt enough.

I have been wearing the Lowa Baffin Pro for a few years. I am not sure what the leather thickness is, but they're pretty stout.

I have the Lowa Baffins and wear them in the fall. The Jim Greens are much better suited to hot weather.

Love all the suggestions, great ideas. Does anyone have an opinion on the Jim Green AR8 vs Numzaan?
It appears the AR8 is built similar to the Razorback. I like the razorback, but it offers very little cushion underfoot and I would prefer a slightly taller toe box. That being said the razorback is my go to around my property (high desert). I have hobbit feet and JGs are some of the only boots that fit me well w the wide lasts. I bet the Numzaan is softer underfoot, esp w the wedge sole. Rose Anvil on YouTube reviews a lot of their boots.

If you hunt in cactus or huisache buy the Jim Greens with the leather midsole. Read the descriptions carefully as some don’t have it.

I have a pair of Hoffman Explorers that I love, and they advertise 2.8-3 mm leather. Could be a fit for you.

They also offer the Armor Pro that has a coating over the lower portion of the boot that is supposed to help with puncture resistance. Might be what you’re looking for? You can always give them a call to discuss. Great company that makes quality boots.

The Hoffman boot models with the Armor Pro/"Stark" material or their models with the Kevlar/leather upper may be the best match. I'll give them a call tomorrow.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

If you can still find them - I think they might be discontinued but not 100% sure?? But one that might work and comes in wide is the Lowa Tibet GTX. Not sure how think the leather is but its thick! A really nice boot if it fits you and is a bit taller so that might be a good thing?
