What do you use for bears?

I sold my 375H&H, but I do currently have a Winchester Classic stainless in 338 Win. I also carry a 10MM in the lower 48 with Underwood 200 hard cast. In Alaska I have a 629 44Mag with Underwood 305 hard cast. Do you think I'm under or over gunned.

If I were leaving today I would have a 308 and a 9mm. So I guess from my perspective, over.

Never dealt with the big bears but that’s what I would carry.

Smaller is only better for hunting if you can’t shoot large caliber rifles accurately. Lol. If an eldm or tmk out of a 223 is good, an eldm or TMK out of a 7prc is a hell of a lot better.

Ever missed your first shot and needed a second?

Thought you had a solid position, but you didn’t and can’t see the impact or lose the animal in your scope after the shot?

I can shoot my 30-06 quite well for a single, well placed shot. I can also shoot my 22 creedmoor quite well, but the difference is that I can have 5 well placed shots from the creedmoor in the same time it would take me to shoot 2-3 from the 30-06.

On paper and on the internet everything is a perfectly placed single shot behind the shoulder. In that case, a bigger nastier bullet might kill slightly faster…but my experience is that crap happens and the ability to see my impact from any position and make a quick follow up shot is one of the most important aspects of a quick kill and recovery.

And since there is a lot of chest thumping going on, I killed my 65th big game animal last weekend. About half of those were with a 30-06, the more recent half were a variety of smaller cartridges. A few eastern whitetails the majority is western big game. All of that to say I’ve tried it both ways and am firmly in the smaller cartridges camp at this point.
