I think the post was made in jest, but you make a fair point about the severity of the consequences. I once saw a guy loose his salt water boat and gear for 2 bags of shrimp caught out of season.

Even without the consequences, I’ll grab a 6 mil so I don’t feel the need to look over my shoulder while trying to enjoy a hunt, the drive home, and the meat on the table.

If you get caught speeding, they don’t have the power to confiscate your rifle and the vehicle used for transporting the animal you shot with your illegal firearm. In terms of consequences, it’s more akin to a DUI than speeding. Even if morally there’s no real harm in it.

Are there Virginia hunters who use .224 caliber firearms for deer? Absolutely. Even forty years ago there were lots of people using .22-250s to kill deer. It was notorious where I grew up. But, the risk just isn’t worth it if you end up on the wrong side of local authorities and have anything to lose.

That sounds serious. I figured it was a $75 fine. This sounds like NC’s tyrannical flounder laws!
