These guys disagree with RS’s caliber choices

If you get caught speeding, they don’t have the power to confiscate your rifle and the vehicle used for transporting the animal you shot with your illegal firearm.
I think the post was made in jest, but you make a fair point about the severity of the consequences. I once saw a guy loose his salt water boat and gear for 2 bags of shrimp caught out of season.

Even without the consequences, I’ll grab a 6 mil so I don’t feel the need to look over my shoulder while trying to enjoy a hunt, the drive home, and the meat on the table.

Are there Virginia hunters who use .224 caliber firearms for deer? Absolutely. Even forty years ago there were lots of people using .22-250s to kill deer. It was notorious where I grew up. But, the risk just isn’t worth it if you end up on the wrong side of local authorities and have anything to lose.

That sounds serious. I figured it was a $75 fine. This sounds like NC’s tyrannical flounder laws!

Well, since we're being compared to concrete workers, I never was good in school in the first place. So here I am.

In all reality, the vast majority of hunters have a different mindset than the “smaller is better” group on RS.
Not even all of RS agrees on that position.

I've adopted the "smaller is better" mindset, I have a 7PRC barrel sitting in the safe that'll get screwed on next month.
Smaller is only better for hunting if you can’t shoot large caliber rifles accurately. Lol. If an eldm or tmk out of a 223 is good, an eldm or TMK out of a 7prc is a hell of a lot better.

For what we normally hunt in the lower 48 the smaller caliber premium bullets seem to work adequately. However, if the game you are shooting is of the kind that will take you on, a larger caliber is highly recommended.

Why stop there? A 285 ELDM out of a .338 Edge is clearly a hell of a lot better than a puny 7PRC. That's my preferred pronghorn combination. Usually step it up to .408 Cheytac for elk though. But only because I can't shoot the 12.7mm x 108 accurately.

I don’t disagree - keep it behind the shoulder and send it.

You should bulk up a bit so you can handle the recoil!

For me, the whole 223 thread illustrated that bullet construction and performance is important. It shouldn’t matter what caliber or cartridge is used. Pick a good bullet.
