I'm interested in a thermal optic, but I know nothing about them. I'm really only looking to use it for a couple purposes. I don't really see myself mounting it on a gun to hunt with. Something budget friendly and handheld would be ideal.

1. Scanning food plots before entering to hunt. I don't really need to identify specifically what is there, I just want to know if something is in the plot.

2. Checking traps from a distance for caught (live) animals. Again, I don't really need to be able to identify what the animal is, I just want to know if something is there before I make the 200 yard walk.

Any advice?

A 256 thermal monocular would do everything you're asking.

256 is the sensor resolution. 384 would be a step above that, & 640 is another step above. You can look at videos on YouTube that compare the clarity of these scopes just to give you an idea of how they perform.
