I've been building custom rifles since the early 70's and I have to say I've been disappointed to see a change in the industry over the last 20 years. When I first built a rifle i had the joy of discussing the project and getting the input from my smith how to end up with a best finish. Today it seams I check the box, take a number and wait in line to hear when it's completed. Sad but not the same experience,
I just had a great experience with a true professional smith. I have a rifle Keven Weaver built 20 plus years ago and its a fine rifle. I wanted to re-chamber it to a 20 Blitz so I sent it to him with a specific request with my reamer and gauge and asked him to re-chamber it to a Blitz along with cutting 3" off the barrel. Instead of just doing as I asked he sent me a proposal with several options. I gave him a call and he said, "what if we" and he engaged in what I was trying to accomplish. Wow, what a surprise!
When I received the re-chambered rifle it came as we discussed with another surprise. He took the cut off piece of the barrel and chambered it with my reamer so I have a gauge to verify seating depth. Simple idea but far and above todays service a typical smith provides. What a blessing to deal with a professional that thinks about the customer and give service and effort to show that they care, Thank you Kevin Weaver.
If you want a professional smith Kevin's the guy.
