The warmest, toughest fleece jacket I have ever owned. And it's CHEAP.

I own a ton of fleece jackets. But the best fleece jacket I have ever seen- BY FAR - is the USGI Polartec 300 fleece jacket. It will blow your mind. And would probably cost several hundred in the civilian market. Just for the super thick and durable Polartec 300 fleece fabric. But it can be had for relatively cheap as surplus. Less than $100 new. And around $50 used.

It was issued as part of the ECWCS system. They were issued to several different branches and units. USMC and NAVY included. Most were manufactured by DSCP and Pelham. Search eBay by any of this information. Or simply "USGI Polartec 300 fleece jacket".

*Only the black ones are 300wt. The green ones are 100wt.

These are the heaviest weight, most bombproof fleece jackets I have ever owned.

New for less than $100:

Used you can find them for $50 or maybe less. Here are some used but in mint condition for $30:

(Remember a size or two smaller will fit. And Allegheny is one of the best surplus sellers there is. These are only small and medium. But medium would fit you if you were a large. Search eBay. There are a ton sellers.)

I would not hesitate to buy these used. The fabric and construction will never wearout. They are sized very large. Buy one size down. Maybe even two.

They come with heavyweight YKK zippers. AND with pit zips. And really tough, windproof nylon fabric over the arms and shoulders.

The fleece is so thick it's thicker than any other commercial fleece jacket I've ever seen. And the nylon upper shell will beat any brush - no problem. And they are cheap.

My Spartan tactical one (very similar design ) worked wonders this fall. However size wise it is the opposite and runs a bit small for size.. works well for what it is though.

I had a $30 usgi one years a go and melted a big whole in it around a fire. I bought my wife a North Face version, its around $150 jacket or more. Great jacket if its cold.

The fleece is so much thicker than any other jacket I've looked at. But I don't really look much at expensive jackets. The original 300wt fleece just seems tougher too. My Columbia fleece jackets don't even compare. It's more of a brushed fleece. The Polartec jacket is like a thick, dense pile. And every piece of stitching, wrist strap, zippers, seams - everything is over built for combat in a very cold climate.

Here's some close ups of one of mine. I think I paid $50 used for it:

I ran one for about 8 years before I killed it. They are fantastic. Guys complain about the compressability and weight.....but what you get for your money is warmth and knowing the zipper won't spontaneously fail. You won't get that from a $200 puffy.

I still wear mine. It was issued to me over 20 years ago. Kept me warm in Afghanistan and Iraq. It just plain works!

Just remember these were made to fit over armor. Or something. They are very big. Try to buy from Allegheny on eBay. They are the fairest surplus seller on eBay. Descriptions are always right. Meaning their grade A or B says exactly what it is. If your buying new - just make sure the seller is well rated. Normal eBay stuff.

But ya. Buy one or maybe even two sizes to small. Make sure they take returns. I think I started with a 2 or 3xl and ended up with an XL. Depends on how your gonna wear it.

Probably one of the few USGI products that far exceed the commercial versions. For a very fair price.

These aren't really hiking jackets. These are sit in the woods, in minus degrees, with no fire jackets. Very big and thick. And made to last a lifetime. If Arc'teryx or some really major brand made a real bombproof fleece jacket for extreme cold. This would be it. But it would be $400+.

These are also great for emergency car kits. As again, they are big and bulky. But man, they are warm and built like tanks.

The pants that go with these are also very good and very cheap. Like $10-$12. They are 200wt fleece. Not 300 like the jackets. But are very thick and very warm. I think Coleman's and McGuire's Surplus sell them. Probably eBay too. This combination of fleece pants and jacket can not be beat. You will not find a warmer set for static outdoor use in the market.

I had one of these jackets years ago. It was great, i ended up putting it on and lighting a fire while on a hike and burned a big ass hole in it and threw it in the trash. I never replaced it, This thread is a good reminder to get another. I like good gear cheap.....

I bought my wife a north face heave fleece, Same jacket with a north face logo and it was $200+

awesome! Used have one of those in my military days. My favorite fleece is a natural gear fleece Henley. It’s discontinued now but natural gear nailed that garment. No zippers and minimal seems, big heavy duty stitched buttons, tight fabric that’s soft and warm, durability that’s out of this world. I’ve had it for 10 years, hunt in it, camp in it, lounge around the house in it, yard work, etc and it looks brand new.
