The Teratorn: A Shoot2Hunt X EXO Bag Collab

A Teratorn made its way up to Alaska recently.
Some of the others on this thread have done a great job of showing the well thought out features that the S2H team have implemented into this pack.

Personally, the feature that stands out the most is the wing system. Not only for accessing a large amount of gear without going into the main compartment, but protecting my gun scope & action from the elements. I typically don’t care about quick access to my gun, especially on long expedition style hunts. If I did, I could use the EXO gun bearer as normal on the outside of the wing.

Bushwhacking is a common occurrence in the places I hunt, as is rough terrain where the pack is scraping and bumping up against trees and rocks. Having the entire gun protected will be a huge benefit.

Packrafting is also a part of numerous hunts I do. After strapping on the raft & paddle, it is typically difficult to access the main bag without taking those things off. With this design, the wings offer more storage options in order to access more of your day hunting gear.

@Ryan Avery wanted everyone to know that the pack isn’t as big as it looks, as I’m 5’6. Same with the OG suppressor in his little hands 😆

Did you try attaching a rifle with a non-folding chassis or stock?

When Form and I developed this pack, I was surprised at how closely our ideas aligned regarding what a cold-weather bag should have. The only point of contention was the sleeping bag compartment; I'm still undecided about this feature; the Gen 1 bag I tested last season didn’t include a zippered compartment. I am, however, warming up to the idea. My favorite bag has always been the Kifaru EMR2, which shares features similar to Teratorn's. However, the Teratorn is more user-friendly and has fewer straps. With the legendary K4 frame and the best lid in the hunting backpack market, this is an excellent choice for a cold-weather or extended trip backpack.

Batwings are the way!!!

So what is the purpose of a separate compartment for a sleeping bag? I carry mine in a waterproof stuff sack and it goes to the bottom of the pack. Is the point to eliminate a stuff sack? Keep it from shifting around?

The side pockets of my 5k fit a standard rifle stock fine, and these look much larger.

Though I wouldn't carry it that way simply because it would be too tall for my taste. I really liked the Exo rifle carry system with my side bags then pulled over the rifle, similar to his pic.

When you drop the pack, it's two quick buckles and the rifle is free.

Think of it in two different ways-

1). A separate, bottom access to the main bag without having to unclip the wings or open the bag up to access. This alone makes it worthwhile. The ability to unzip and go in the bottom of the pack without having a yard sell is fantastic. It also is good for putting wet, muddy, etc gear/items in and keeping them separate from the main bag.

2). A traditional sleeping system compartment. Think snowing, raining, muddy, etc. Separate from main bag- which means some level of protection, not just from water/dirt, but also from anything sharp in the main bag (Ti stove, poles, etc). It also means very easy access to only the sleep system, or the main bag for the shelter/stove/etc.
For me, I want to protect my sleep system as much as possible. It is the last line of safety and comfort that I pack in.

Anyone got pics of it fully loaded including a simulated load on the load shelf? Will a rifle and tripod still fit under the wings when the load shelf is full, bag is completely full, and wings are completely full? Looks really nice so far.

Can you explain some specific downsides? Seems like there's a lot of packs out there with these fabrics and I haven't heard of issues, not that I've been looking either.
For a hunting pack the number one issue with those fabrics is noise, especially when it's cold. You can seam seal a cordura pack if you are so inclined and get to a really high level of waterproofness with much less noise.

The divider in the bag has a zipper of you want one big compartment. It's a better way of separating your lighter, bulkier items in the bottom compartment from your heavier items placed higher. It's nice to be able to grab your sleep system out of the bottom compartment by opening that one zipper and not having to pull up and around other gear. Heavier items don't then sink to the bottom of the pack.

I do like the bat wings, they were very usable on my Kifrau packs. I also like the larger side pockets, but can you get anything out of the side pockets if the bat wings are loaded and strapped down? I prefer a single horseshoe zipper, like the one on my K4 5000, but the pack is interesting, and with it being made by EXO it will be top quality.

Are you asking about getting something out of the stretch side pockets with the batwings loaded and strapped down? Yes you can. The side stretch pockets are also quite a bit larger than on the other bags from EXO.

You can also get into the batwing pockets with the straps buckled, unless you have them wrapped like Form shows in one of his videos from earlier in the thread. That's for cinching it down into empty mode pretty much though.

Ok that makes a ton of sense, I ALWAYS have to put 'crap' around and above my bag to keep items from slipping down and from puncturing the bag.

Yes, that was my question. In the pictures the bat wings look to completely cover the side pockets. Thanks

Obviously not the Teratorn, but here's my 5k with R3 wings. Entire young Aoudad ram in the load shelf and skull/horns under the lid. Rifle in Exo rifle carrier strapped under right wing bag, tripod on opposite side in left pocket and strapped under left wing bag (unseen).

Right wing has a FL Chamberlin puffy, which fills up the entire volume, and the left one has my puffy pants and binos which does the same.

The bag is missing my tent and sleep system that I had to go break down 2 miles away at the car, otherwise I was pretty much fully loaded up.

I imagine the new pack would be near-identical. Difference is that these wings are attached to the straps of the frame vs to the bag itself so the ride location is adjustable. Here I have them about 2 inches away from the frame because of the load shelf, similar to if they were sewn to the bag.

Have gotten a bunch of questions about how the pack compresses.

Empty pack, wings full and cinched down, you can see a bit of movement. Then in day hunt/or scout mode with the straps wrapped. It is very tight-

Empty pack, Day hunt/scout mode with empty wings tucked between bag and frame. You can also have a full pack and tuck the wings as well-

Man, I did not anticipate that bag would cinch down that clean. Really glad that those straps wrap around the wings like that for compressing down puffys or other bulky gear toward the midline of the pack when the main bag isn't completely loaded with camp. I can picture having a spotter in that wing with the straps bottomed out and still having a couple inches of play for it to flop about. Also, that lid should be sold solo as well, the organization and convenience of the shock cord (both interior and exterior) looks killer. I want one to run on my 2200 for archery season and overnighters.

Dude, I was just thinking about this feature before scrolling through to see your post. Completely eliminates the need for a scope/action cover; like you said protects it from bumping about and I imagine with puffy layers in that outside batwing that rifle would be quite cushioned. Plus, it keeps that rifle strapped in tight while packing meat or hiking out in the dark or riding into somewhere.

How long is that barrel? I have a 20" 6.5PRC w/ the Ti Pro 4 currently but im sure I'll be going OG or next arrivals relatively soon.

That’s an 18” barrel with a 5.7” Scythe on the end. A regular stock would sit a little bit lower, as the folded butt end of the HNT 26 does not sit all the way down in the side stretch pocket due to its size.

Just going off the pictures and description it looks like a sleeping bag pocket that I had on a couple Lowe Alpine backpacks.
There was an internal zipper that would close off the bottom section of the bag and I would stuff the sleeping bag into the compartment and not use a stuff sack. I can’t really tell you what the advantages were over using a stuff sack outside of it helped keep things organized in my pack.
I always thought those partitions for sleeping bag compartments were to sort of keep the load a bit higher when you didn’t have a bag in there. Maybe it works, maybe not.
