The Rokslide Stock Traders Thread

Good post. Add to that^

....the current S&P index is tech weighted. The tech sector will continue to outperform over a long time horizon.

Then add; the folks selecting this S&P index rejigger it regularly- dumping the under performers and adding the over achievers. This has the effect of a better return on investment.

I haven't looked to see if you can buy an S&P ETF that is evenly weighted and less concentrated.
For example; in the Tech ETF space you can get VGT thats heavily weighted to 6 stocks.....or you can buy QTEC that is evenly weighted to the entire space- they hold a max of 3% in any one stock. I really like that one.
RSPA was probably the most diverse when I looked. Fowl Plays post got me curious. It’s still pretty sector heavy just like the SP500 but it’s not as concentrated in specific companies. I didn’t dig too deep though.

I remember when GOOG went public in late 2004, IIRC. At the time I remember thinking, they give it (search and email) away for free so how much money could they make? That should tell you how smart I am.

No step up usually means in an irrevocable trust. Not trying to pry, but man losing the step up basis for that kind of gain is gonna be costly. And the last entity you want to give a dime more than you have to is Uncle Sam.

Same here. When they told me they bought all that Google I was like you guys don't even know what Google is. Turned out I was the one who didn't know what Google was. Lol.

And yes, it was an irrevocable trust that I have since dissolved.

For my Robinhood account, which is separate from our retirement accounts, I have 20% of my portfolio in VUG and the rest is allocated to six different individual stocks, currently. My VUG is up 22% and my individual stocks range from 24% to 600%.
That is impressive! Nice work.

Trump, love him or hate him, has become the primary driver of the massive market swings in the past few months. Since his April tariff announcement, to last friday PM’s 100% china tariff, to Sunday’s China’s going to be just fine, to yesterday’s soybean spat - he announces his policy first on his social media site Truth Social via “tweet”. It’s always posted there first and the market immediately reacts violently one way or the other. It’s hard to keep up!
Not only is it entertaining, it has created some great buying opportunities this year!

I'm sure everyone is watching Gold. Is it a bubble of massive proportions or a solid investment?
I dunno. I've seen it go through these periods of speculation before.

Fact; $34.2 billion of inflows in 10 weeks — biggest ever. Wow, thats crazy.

Can a guy jump into that game of musical chairs and make some money? Maybe, if you got out at the right time. The problem is we are competing with outfits in that space that can trade millions of dollars in less than a second.

Thankfully there are other investments where a guy can make some $$$. Personally if I thought the USD was going to go belly up I would be buying farm ground....How is gold going to help you feed your family.....but what do I know.....

Just keep in mind gold prices are so high because China and the other BRICS countries are buying as much as they can, including entire gold mines all over the world, to back up an alternative international trading system outside of western controlled systems like SWIFT. As soon as BRICS stop buying the price will drop dramatically to previous levels like $2,000/oz.

Good question, there is a video of long lines in Australia and New York to buy/sell gold. When that happens, when retail starts rushing in, the money has already been made, leaving others to hold the bag, imo.

The one thing it confirms for me is, people are beginning to loose faith in the current system, could also be some ptsd from 2008.

History has shown when a currency collapses using the inflating currency to purchase assets has worked well for those who did just that. In some cases individuals received a loan to buy land and paid it off the very next day bc the money supply grew that much over night (Germany after Wwi)

Having the basic needs already on hand is also a good idea imo. That’s why during the Great Depression people would send their kids to go live with people who lived in the country, bc there was a way to feed them compared to the big cities.
