Let’s see some pictures of the one that got away here’s mine this previous year didn’t have density altitude set up on my rangefinder correctly causing me to miss
Burned 7 days hunting this guy on the muzzleloader hunt here in Utah on an otc tag. He lived close to a road in some steep country, never got a photo of him hard horned. After he striped his velvet he disappeared as they often do. No matter how much time hunting close to or around the cover I never could connect with him.
Hunted this buck hard for to many days to even count. Slept many nights in a ground blind trying to catch him at first or last light with a bow in my hand.
Needless to say no luck. I was obsessed with trying to kill this deer that was way smarter then me!
watershed hunt called this bull out of his bed with 20 cows…screw on scope had come loose sometime during hunt or after my Idaho hunt..took photo of him at 8am at about 1200 yds..want a do over
These are all the ones I have pics of..
First is the biggest typical ive seen. High country 10k feet. Blown out before first light on opening day by other hunters.
2nd, same day as the first. Was surrounded by the herd when they blew out. Bum rushed and cow called. Stopped him in his tracks. Sailed one over his back with no time to range.
3rd, idaho muzzleloader. Watched a bachelor group of bulls for 3 days before this broke 7 point bedded in a melted off saddle. About 100 yards from the saddle I looked down and my peep had fallen off, it was my 28th birthday.
Jon Boys had some major heart breaks in the elk woods i dont know how many big bulls id have on the wall had I not messed up or missed... 3 over 330 for certain.
Shot this buck in 2005. Missed him on the first shot and hit him on the second, quartering way and hit too far forward. Punched through the shoulder and out the brisket. Thought I dumped him. Tracked great blood in the snow and pushed him..... Was way to young and dumb to know better and should have let him lay. Found 6 beds the first night and went over a mile in a big circle. Left him and came back two days later looking for his carcus. He was bedded 75 yards from where we stopped tracking two days prior. Jumped him up and lost blood and tracks as the snow had melted. Looked everywhere for his sheds/deadhead after the season and never found anything.
The one that got away this year and last won’t next… if a bull can have 9 lives, I ran him out of them… should be a short season this year
The nice thing about hunting otc is the one that got away didn’t get away unless it’s dead. I had a bummer in 2014 on a giant at spitting distance, arrow wasn’t on the rest when I shot, but I made good on that bull in 17’
I like the ones that got away, extra motivation for the next season… as bad as it feels messing up on a big one doesn’t compare to the satisfaction of redemption. Just don’t mess up on a tag that takes years to draw
My current one that got away is in serious trouble, I have his number.
