The hunting forum needs a bison subsection

Need is a strong word.. You probably should have used the word "want" . Hard to get a true bison tag. I'd pay $6k to shoot a farmed bison though.. Seems like a decent deal. Probably walk away with 800# meat right?

I've guided and shot several 2 or 3 year old cow bison in Texas at a buddy's ranch and averaged 390# of boneless meat. It went up to 450# when I kept bone in meat + ribs.
I've done so for the last 3 or 4 years on personal hunts and never paid over $2500.
keep in mind these are immature cows not big bulls - less meat but the meat is "better" and cheaper.
A big 6+ year old bull will get you 500-750# of meat for ~$3500-5k. You might get more meat off of an older bull but at some point the quality of meat goes down as your yield goes up. Where the sweet spot is... that is up to you.
So both your meat yield estimates and cost estimates are both incorrect.

My 17-18yr old wild bull from Alaska's Delta Junction herd yielded over 1,000lbs of meat. There is an enormous body size difference in a 6-8yr old bull versus a +9yr old bull.

He had excellent flavor but made tire rubber seem as chewable as Wonder bread. After they resharpened the grinder from time to time and ran him through a few times, he made good burger, and dry aging the tenderloins and backstraps 40-127 days made those into excellent steaks.

My Utah Henry Mountains cow was 4yrs old, and she yielded just under 400lbs of excellent meat. Very little of her went into the grinder and I still think about some of those steaks and roasts.

I was gonna tell him its best to keep hunting, killed all my elk between 10 and 2 I think.

Now just because elk hunters can't read ... that doesn't mean there shouldn't be a bovine subforum (that was a good suggestion AZ-Hunter_2000).
Some of us are fortunate enough to be able to hunt free range bison and might want to share the hunt as johnnycake did.

Scoot, if you want to look up info on muskrats, check the small game and trapping forum....
