Two days ago, we reached our trail head and unloaded our horses for our day trip. My old mare didn't look right. She kept favoring her right rear leg. We started out and she was quickly walking sideways.

We went back home and traded her out for another. She is still favoring her leg and at 31 I'm guessing I will have to put her down in a week or so.

I have had to shoot about 8 so far but mainly for lack of teeth. It's always an unpleasant event with no alternatives.

I’m sorry that’s rough, I put down my Great Dane this year, never done it myself till now, but he was my wife and I’d boy, it sucked. 😭

Sorry for your loss. We’ve had two move on this year, both were horses that were born on our place.

My mare was born when I was 12, she was 26 but still doing good. She had a heart attack in the trailer after we got cows home this past year. She is the best horse I’ve ever had, pretty much been my kids horse for the last 12 years.

The other was my grandpa’s last horse, he was the first horse to buck me off when I was 8 years old, he was 3. He had quite a few quirks and it took me a long time to like him. But he could out walk anything, had no quit, and had a lot of cow. He turned into a good horse. My youngest daughter loved him and he was great with her in his old age.

Both were tough to see go.
