Sad deal for sure... I plan on going solo more and more in the future... I prefer a partner but to be honest of all my friends only 2 are capable of going..The rest just lack the willpower needed on hard hikes... I would like to invest in either a sat phone or a SPOT type of device, until then I'm not gonna let fear from keeping me from going solo, I will just play things safer and try my hardest to stick to the area's and routes I gave family/friends in case I get hurt or sick...

Thats a bad deal. I need to re-register my SPOT asap. Hunting alone is a such a great soul refresher........but also a big risk as well. Its always in the back of my mind on what could happen. Be careful out there folks.

Sorry to hear about that. In all my zealousness to attack the mountain, I still know my limitations. We will never know what truly happened. Sad indeed. I will be bringing a sat phone.

Heartbreaking! but probably a good reminder for all of us that spending time in the backcountry isn't without risks. Our experience with Spot coverage up here in AK has been hit or miss, so we never go without a Sat phone. We split one with a friend to save costs, but when our plans conflicted last season we rented one to be on the safe side. While I usually go along, I am occasionally the wife at home (Luke often goes without me the few days each month that he is home and I am working) and being able to hear his voice a few minutes most nights makes it a lot easier to have him away.

Also, In the event of an emergency, having two way communication with a phone (versus one way with the Spot) about whether help is coming (or not) can really help you to evaluate your options and make a plan.
