Years ago I worked in the cycling industry, and while it was a terrible longterm career, I could buy products at wholesale or lower as an industry professional. Many companies would do pro-deals to get their product out there. I'm sure most retail oriented industries do similar things.

You would buy bikes, gear, etc., use it for a year, sell it for a profit, then "reinvest" those funds into newer/better stuff. After a few years, you have worked your way up to top tier gear with no real cost to yourself. And if you're savvy, you've made money all along the way.
