The 22UM

Just starting into this thread but posting this question so I don't forget. Have you guys looked into nose ringing a 77 smk for something like this? Was curious if it would handle rpm better? Been really eyeing the tool for 105s in an arc

With a polymer tip, i don’t see the need for it. The nose ring is for initiating expansion since the 115 DTAC is a closed point bullet, a polymer tipped match bullet generally doesn’t need help on the expansion side.

I am curious about different bullets and how the nose ring will affect their terminal performance. It would be cool to see the difference in bullet behavior.

Same here its just hard to cough up the money, if it would make the 105 bthps a reliable huntinf round I would do it since I have a couple arcs that love that bullet and could offset the cost

I feel like there’s no use really when we have the 77 TMK. Now the .224 95 SMK with a nose ring would be neat.

I absolutely am doing a 224 Weatherby- it’s the neatest cartridge. I will use whatever cartridge it takes to get the MV with the bullets I want I am also not enamored with short and fat as some are, and am not worried if I need to use a LA case.
What velocity are you chasing? And what bullet?

I asked this in the 22 creed thread but, what would a 22 creed do if it was +p’ed. Probably not 3,500 with an 88 but maybe with the 77 out of a 20 inch barrel.

3,500fps MV with a 20” barrel. 88gr.
Think this is a big ask?

At 65kpsi the creeds roughly 3200fps in a 20 Isnt it? I run them at 3180 in a 18 but have RL26. I could go much higher before pressure. (Ladder went to 3300 without "signs" but I'm in a kimber so backed off as that velocity suggests I'm in the 75kpsi realm and I dont need it.

If your happy running pressure a bit higher knowing bolt thrust in a .473 based case at 75kpsi is below that of 300wsm at saami limits I guess the 280ai as a parent would get you there maybe?

No polymer tip on a 77 smk. I know we forget sierra makes another 77 match projectile sometimes.

I'd like to nose ring the 95 smks I'm running

Seems like the 22 SAW would get close. Idk what powder or how hot they were running it to get 3500fps with an 80gr in 22” barrel though and how much room there was to go up.
Hot for sure. There's around 3-400fps between 60 and 80 kpsi roughly (280ai vs 7mm backcountry is 2930 vs 3300 with a 155). That where most of this magical velocity in these cartridges comes from. Most of these improved cases are just much better at reducing bolt thrust due to minimal taper etc and dont show tradition signs as fast. That's not a negative and I'm pro running higher pressures than saami if your setup can handle them and loading to traditional signs. But it's pressure that gets the extra velocity.

Some potential pros of pressure are as it increases ability to burn powder in the short barrels actually increases. Technically less recoil for performance as less powder mass contribution.

I had a 22in 22cm that I'd run 77tmk at 3450 in cooler weather with N555 in lapua brass. Warm weather I had to drop it to the next node down at 3340 or I'd get bolt lift. 22saw would def give more performance as it's likely 5-6gr more powder.
