The 22 creedmoor thread

On this particular morning, my max range to 1,800 FPS with this particularly fast 16" barrel was right at 550 yards I believe. I regularly practice with my 223 and 77 TMKs much further than that. Think consistent hits, in wind, in mountainous terrain, nearly daily, WAY past the guns terminal range.

You can either read and call wind or you can't. You can either shoot from field positions in the mountains or you can't. Leaning on a cartridge that "bucks wind better" no matter the range, is a recipe for misses as I'm sure you know and have seen as well.

Is it "practical" for most? Probably not, but that's because of shooter capabilities. Blaming wind is THE most common excuse I see in shooters, particularly in "higher level" shooters.

Absolutely blaming the wind is the most common. It is also the hardest part of Long range shooting in my opinion. We have all these calculators and formulas, that tell us what our bullet drop will be. There is no formula for accurate wind calls. Experience is the only way to accurately call wind. Having a gun that bucks wind better, absolutely will result in more hits from a guy who is not an expert at wind calls. Obviously with limits. Margin of error on wind calls is huge imo. You can be the best wind caller out there and still be off on challenging terrain.

I suck at wind calls in varying terrain. I am working on it, but it is hard in New terrain imo. Where my steel is at in the desert, I am pretty good because I know the typical nuances of that spot. Take wind out or lower the mph and long range shooting gets exponentially easier imo.

I was right around 3090 or so with new barrel and virgin brass. Even now with the barrel fully broken in, a new batch of virgin brass dropped back down to 3135, from 3194 on twice fired.
Only difference in components are that I’m using Fed 210 LRP’s. ACE 7.5 twist barrel.

Yep, second fired brass is now sitting at 3070 FPS, all trued up now before our stone hunt

It's really hot here and the humidity is fluctuating 65-75%.

My 88ELD 10 round groups tightened up by shooting 2 rounds at time and taking breaks.

The best I have done shooting 5 and 5 and pushing thru the barrel shimmer is 2MOA.

My bootleg brass took a nosedive on this firing. It's at least 4 firings.

I’m sure this is somewhere in this thread but it’s too big for me to even bother looking. What’s the preferred powder(s) for 88s? I have 2 barrels coming to mess with - a 16.5 and a 22.

Also - alpha or Peterson brass? Gonna run LRP because I already have a ton of LRP.

I've shot a lot of 88's in both Peterson and Alpha both with H4350.

I’m getting better case fill and accuracy with H1000 in my 16.5”. H4350 was faster but hit pressure signs around 40 grains. Accuracy wasn’t as good but I didn’t really try to develop a load. I figured the cooler H1000 will give me better barrel life to boot. 2950 fps at 44.5 grains. Pressure with hot chamber at 45 grains. 88ELD seated at boat tail/neck/shoulder junction.

I started with H4350, switched to N565 and I'm currently loading H1000 which is my favorite so far.
