What is the general consensus on barrel twist for the 88's ?
Home range is 4500k but I do travel to sea level often. Hunting is done from 4k-12k.

I'd like to keep the rpm's down if possible. Barrel length will be 20 inch.

One particular reason I’m building both is legality in a few states. Very interested to hear @Formidilosus opinion on your question though.
Is there an up to date list of states where .22 isn't "allowed" for hunting big game? I would think somebody has consolidated this into a quick list somewhere? Last I looked into it, it was maybe 6 or 7 states max? And none of them were states I had any real desire to hunt anytime soon.

Colorado is the main one for me. Wyoming for Elk, I think Nevada and many Canadian provinces have restrictions too.

@Dioni A is shooting 88's out of a 22 Creedmoor he may have some good insight.

I've shot them out of a few guns now. The 80 gn is much more forgiving. I haven't been super impressed with the accuracy out of the 88s over multiple different guns. They all shot best with h4350 and were 7 or 7.5 twist.

88s have shot well for me out of a 1:8 twist barrel.

Mine is a 1/8 twist too, the 88's are stable at sea level and are shooting really good, plan to rebarrel with another 1/8 when the time comes. Velocity is 3040

Would there be any reason to choose 6 mm rather than 22 for any particular reason, ie Splash size, wound cavity size etc.?

(22 cm w/ 80 & 88’s, 6 CM w/ 108-115g)

Not really. Well, widely available factory ammo at least for now. If that isn’t a concern, the 22CM with good bullets will have the overall highest hit rates for nearly all shooters to well beyond terminal range. Splash will be a bit more obvious with the 6mm in some situations, but not enough to make a real difference.

Tikka 223 takeoff cut to 20” and rechambered to 22CM.

First 9 rounds out of the gun, 77gr TMK. Light load and trued at 740 yards at 3,040fps MV.

Guessed at load for the next with 80gr ELD-X’s-

IMG_0876.jpeg

Right at 3,200 fps.

Couldn’t leave well enough alone so went up .5gr-

Then tried @Dioni A load of 62gr ELD-VT. It doesn’t particularly like it, but it did true out at 3,580fps MV-

The main hunting load will be the 80gr ELD-X and is done. Was done with the very first ten rounds. I will try to get the 62gr ELD-VT to work as well.

Has anyone tried either the 77 or 85 gr Barnes matchburners on game yet?

Any particular reason you went with the 80 eldx over the 88 for a main hunting load?

I have 500 rounds of factory Hornady precision hunter in 22 Creedmoor that uses the 80 eldx. This will be saami approved soon and will start hitting shelves before too long hopefully.

I'll post up some garmin chrono numbers and 100 yard groups here soon. This will be from a factory Tikka T3X 8 twist barrel rechambered to 22 Creed.

Iv got some 80eldx that I plan to use this year if they shoot.

Just mounted my scope back on with some UM rings and am about to get the rifle going again.

Deer and antelope only in the menu.

Handloads in my 18” rechambered 223 T3 are pushing 80gr eldms at 3070fps in Hornady brass and 3050fps in peterson brass. It’s on the milder side in my rifle.

Picked up a box of the factory Hornady 80gr eldms and ran them over the chrono velocity was 3073fps.

I’m sure the eldx velocity will be similar. Another guy posted these velocitys from the Hornady factory 80gr eldms in his 20&26” Bartleins. 3240fps in the 20” and 3408fps in the 26”
