Shooting the 22 creed back to back with the 223… decisions.

22 creed with 88eldm at 2900, 7mph rifle where I’ll be hunting (antelope)

223 with 75eldm at 2780, 6mph rifle where I’ll be hunting

I won’t pull the trigger past 500 yards.

Crazy how much easier the 223 is to spot shots with positionally.

Plus with the 223 I can justify lugging along 300 rounds to plink at prairie dogs after tags are filled.

Not a wrong decision to make I don’t think. I know antelope can be tougher to get a good range on so the faster would be a little more optimal.

That’s why I’m willing to try an 80 eldx load, there’s almost nothing different between the 88s being they are going that slow and the 75 in the 223. Hopefully 80s ~3000 shoot okay.

Having a tough time reconciling stability vs bullet rpm. The barrel twist options I have easily available are 1 in 7" or 8". Barrel will most likely finish at 20" Checking the 80 vld on bergers twist calculator and 80 and 88 eldm gyro factor on strelock both point to the 7 twist providing much better stability, especially being I hunt often at sea level 30 to 40° air temp and 90 to 100% humidity. Where I get a little worried is Ill be spinning them between 308k at 3000fps to 329k at 3200fps. It sounds like that is the beginning of the danger zone for bullet blow up. Obviously a 7.5 twist would be a good compromise but being in Canada keeping things simple and ordering from Ibi I'm limited to 7 or 8. Any advice from experience is appreciated.

Just get an 8 twist and plan to shoot 80’s.

Then test the 88’s and see how they stabilize. If they stabilize, great. And if they don’t, it doesn’t matter because the 80’s were the main plan anyways. The 80’s definitely kill and a fast FPS Isn’t a bad thing either.

Id go with 8. My 17" 8 twist stabilizes the 88's just fine at sea level, my next barrel will be an 8 twist too. Id be worried about the rpm with a 7 twist especially in a longer barrel

I've gone with 18" 7 twist as have a similar issue with barrel suppliers in NZ but I chose a barrel maker that specs .2195 bore and that I have a friend using their barrels in 2 28inch 22-250AIs launching 88s at 3340. He burnt the first barrel out at about 900 rounds and is 400 into the second. Otherwise I was very close to just going to 8 twist but I figure if it doesn't work I'll cut my barrel down to 16 inchs.
I figure I'll be running 3150 absolute max in the 18" so should be fine. May even be able to run the 80 eld x a bit faster with the thicker jacket worst case.

I just checked stability on an 88 at 800ft at 0 degrees, with an 8 twist I’m at 1.06.

That’s the reason I went with the 7 twist. Not uncommon for it to be even colder.

What is your velocity?
I had it set for 2900.

But even at 3200 it’s not near the 1.2-1.3 I see suggested as basement.

Not saying an 8 twist won’t work because it obviously does for some, but low altitude and low temps, the numbers don’t work.

This is why I’m looking at 7.5-7.7 Tw barrels. Just seems not as many manufacturers make them. Seems these twist rates would be perfect for 80’s-88’s.

This is why I still haven't ordered my barrel, 3 days of argueing with myself between the 7 and 8. Might have to rethink manufacturers and find a 7.5. I know guys are shooting the 80s from 8 twists and having success but every way I've calculated it even they have marginal stability at low temp/ elevation and the 88s are a no go. Between spring bear hunting estuaries and nov/dec blacktail hunting on Vancouver island its commonly freezing or below at sea level to 500ft. The point of this build is to shoot heavy for caliber I don't want to be stuck in the 75 gr range of bullets

I
Tried an 80eldx load.

16.5” barrel.

H4831sc in alpha brass

41 made 2850fps
42 2945
43 3025

I loaded a bunch at 42 grains to see how the barrel likes them.

I won’t shoot the 77tmk in this gun anymore I don’t think. Balistically in my short barrel it really dosnt do much that the 223 does not. Atleast with the 80 and 88 I get a little more performance.

If I do another 22 creed I think I’d go 20” just to make it a little different from a 223, as of now it’s too close to justify.
I agree my next creed barrel will be around 20”. It had me thinking the other day shooting the 80s out of my 18” 22creed at 3050 vs 2930 out of my 20” 22arc. 800 vs 3500rd barrel life.
Like you I have smaller 22cal hunting rifles so it makes more sense to go 20” with the creed, I’ll still be at 24.2” with the ultra 5.
