Wouldn't an arrow/broadhead combo that shoots accurate at 30 yards, shoot accurate at 100 yards? Ed F

Everything becomes extremely critical the further out you shoot. Just like a rifle.......if a gun is accurate at 100 yards shouldn't it also be just as accurate at 1000 yards? Much like bullet profiles and stability, arrows are ultra-sensitive to bad form and drag. Someone with bad form can shoot accurately enough at 30 yards, but won't even be close at 100. Some BH's are a LOT more forgiving of form and conditions than others are. Throw wind into the equation, and just like LR rifle shooting.......you have some variables to overcome for consistent outcomes.

I shoot a LOT of different BH's and love shooting LR. The best accuracy and consistency I've seen is with the Wac'em Triton as far as fixed blades go. Shuttle T's are close but a little more touchy from my experience. And surprisingly, the original GK Silverflames fly extraordinarily well even at long distances. I haven't shot the Solids, but if they fly as well as the SF's I'd try those from your list. But if I had a once in a lifetime tag and absolutely had to shoot at 100 yards, I'd put the Wac'em on the end of my arrow as far as fixed blade goes.

I have the luxury of having the same energy at 100 yards as a lot of guys have at the bow. So mechanicals can come into play, and I choose the 125gr Spitfire. I actually think those things fly better than field points for me.

What vanes are you using?

2" Quick Spin Speed Hunters. I've tried a bunch of different fletchings and keep coming back to these. I wish I'd stocked up a couple years ago though because they started making the bases a little narrower than they used to and they don't stick as well. I have some from the past that I can't pull off with pliers, but the newer bases are narrower and don't stick as good. They're OK, just not permanently on like they used to be. I used to put arrows through the vanes almost every shooting session. Now they just pop off when I hit them.

I bought some of those vanes to try out. Keep hearing good things about the Wac'em Triton broadheads, just wish they made them in Deep Six. I'll probably buy some Axis arrows to try them out.

I hesitate to even post such a topic, because the scolding and whining will likely become unbearable. If you want to scold or whine about shooting big game with a bow over a certain distance, please start your own thread. This thread is to discuss what broadheads will be most effective at distances over 60 yards.
I currently shoot Rage hypodermics, and I love them. However, I doubt they will get sufficient penetration on long shots. I'm shooting around 280 fps with about a 370 grain VAP. This year I am spending a lot more time shooting and tuning my bow, and have 100 yards as my goal for max effective range. That said, let's discuss the broadheads and leave the rest of the equation for another time. The aspects that seem to be most important are accuracy, penetration, size/amount of cut, and sharpness/durability. For those of you that are killing big game with a bow over 60 yards, what works for you and why? Right now I'm looking heavily at Solids, Black Hornets, and Hunors.

I like how you started your thread. Damn KE and to hell with it. Your question was what broadhead may do well at 100 yds? I would say a good 2 blade with a curved blade profile (similar but not exactly necessarily to the DRT by DirtNap). Also, a high FOC would mean a lot more than total arrow weight at longer distances as already mentioned I think.

Good luck!

With your set up I am not sure if I would be taking on 50 yard shots at deer as you are really on the light side. Not only for loss of energy but any cross wind is really going to mess with your flight at that distance. Shoot 100 for fun but please dont shoot 100 for game unless you change things up a lot. By the way, I have also found that heavier arrows make my rig a lot quieter and I have a lot less game jumping the string.

50 yards... I killed my buck last year at 55 with a Rage Hypodermic and the arrow passed through. I bought a Bowtech Insanity last night, gonna shoot it through the chrony tonight and see where I'm at now.

Hey, no offense, just trying to help out. I have been shooting bows for over 30 years and for a hunting arrow there just seems to be a lot more positives of a heavier shaft over a lighter shaft. Thats all I was saying. I am not saying it cant be done, I am just saying there are better options.

Ramcats.

i think 80% of the bowhunters i met in the AZ wilderness shooting for Couse had them. they all said they fly extremely well out to the long shots.

i have never tried them.

StrutNut no worries man. I agree with you on the heavy arrows. I'm going to a lot heavier arrow with this new setup. I'm going to be doing some 100yd testing of a few heads, just trying to decide on a medium now. Any suggestions?

It's just physics and biology, no voodoo. Sufficient velocity with an arrow having sufficient mass, paired with the right broadhead cutting through the correct part of the animal =dead animal.

Try the wacems. you will like them. Plus it's a utah company:)
I've not shot a lot of heads but switching from rages, the wacems flew better than some mechanicals I tried
I just wish they left a bigger hole

I definitely like the design of the wac ems. I have some tritons and triton XLs hanging around, I'll do a test with them and the Hypodermics. I'm really interested in the Ramcats too, especially the 125s.

My VAPs with vanes and 100 gr heads weigh 415 gr. FOBs and 125s will put me close to 450.

Not a Utah company anymore. Sold to some bowhunters in Alabama late last year I believe. I have talked to one and he seems to be a good guy who is passionate about hunting.

5miles I'll keep that in mind, I haven't made a decision yet. I shot the Insanity tonight at 60lbs (came w/only 60 lb limbs) and 26" with 415gr VAPs. At 50 it would drive the points out the back of my block even on the relatively unshot parts of the target. I need to take the draw length to 27 and find a heavier set of limbs.
