Hello all,

I am excited to finally get frank church rut tag. I am planning a fly in hunt in November for 5 days. I was originally thinking my hilleberg tent and WM bag would be good enough. I do not have a hot tent, as I don’t really need in my normal hunting. The question is, should I consider getting a hot tent for this hunt or just use my normal?

My two cents, having done this hunt many times, a hot tent is a good idea whether you're backpacking or base camp hunting. More than likely you're going to encounter some cold, wet weather that time of year.

I have a SO Cimarron and really like it. That said, if using the stove I find it kind of a pain the ass when the plan is to be mobile. I hate disassembling and reassembling the stove, the pipe, and collecting firewood repeatedly in a different place every night. I now use it more if I am setting up camp for a few days and plan to hunt the surrounding country. With only five days you might not have that luxury unless the plan is to setup a base camp. The Nallo seems like a pretty solid option otherwise. Also, the main value in the hot tent is drying gear out, IMO.

Are you going solo?
For 5 days, I would be tempted to just go with your current tent, but I love my Absorka with a stove for the late season. There is going to be some fiddle factor you are not used to, so if you do decide to go with a hot tent and stove, buy it early, take it out, and set it up multiple times, and not just in your backyard.
Get a good Silky saw to cut wood.
Not sure what your sleeping pad is, but get a high R-value one if you don't have one.
Puffy pants in the late season are a good idea.

You will hunt more hours of the day without a hot tent. And they are not as mobile.

Save the money it usually isn't that bad in early November.

Adding on to some of the other good advice, I used to do this hunt a lot when you could draw it every year. We always brought a base camp tent that had a stove, then we would take off from there for days at a time spiking out without a stove. There are threads you can find with more in depth info for these fly in hunts. Just remember, the day you choose to fly out may very well not be the day you leave due to weather. We have been stuck multiple times for extended periods, one year being 7 extra days waiting for the weather to break so the planes could get us.

I have done this hunt many times and I would not do it without a hot tent. You can get -15° weather on this hunt and nights are very long in November.
