i was loaned a 2 black tennier ind. 4 part MSS bag to use if needed, wont be using the compression bag,or the bivy bag and there is only one inner green bag (dbl bag)

anyway is anyone familar with this setup? use it for hunting? does how low of temp have can they go with just the outer black bag.
i think they are a little heavy, but he said they compress pretty good, not sure what to compare to he hasnt used an other i have have none so .
i was close to getting a wiggy bag i think this would be close to it. i know there are alot smaller out there but to much money for me right now and i really like the wiggys ability to pull moisture out even though larger. i'll stop rambling

This is part of the Military Sleep System. Lots of soldiers have used them for years. I've got three myself. They are plenty warm and plenty heavy. If you aren't packing it in, its a great system.

Patrol bag is 35-50. Main bag is 0-15. Put them together and they can go pretty low. Heavy. Bomb proof. You can get the 4 piece set for $45 if you shop right and don't mind an Acu cover.

A bit heavy for backpacking but definitely a solid bag.

yeah we will be trying to pack in for a few days at a time, i figured it was a bit heavy - was thinking of giving it a try since it wont cost me anything (except weight i guess)

Actually, the black bag shouldn't be that heavy, should be closer to 4.5#. Whole system is around the 11# mark with the stuff sack, and I know the patrol bag and the bivy are both right at 2-2.5# each.

I think the ratings are based on cloth layering too. For the coldest rated temp, its for a few hours in full clothing. I slept in the green bag that is rated for 30 degrees and froze that night in 35-40 degree weather.

You are exactly right. The ratings are all based on whatever clothing the soldier would be wearingin the temperatures they are experiencing, and it is specifically rated for 6 Hrs. of sleep. So, the 30deg bag will get you 6 hrs. of sleep fully clothed at 30 degrees, and so on and so forth. For the way a backcountry hunter uses this gear, I would estimate the black bag to go 30 degrees overnight with baselayers, and the black and green nested to get you to 0 degrees in base layers. This is also assuming a good insulated sleeping pad.

I used it years ago for truck hunting, very good value for what it is. The newest USMC system has a better bivy sack with it, but just comes with a thin patrol sleeping bag rated at 30 degress. I use the newest Kifaru slick bag now, and they are nice and warm down to the rated temp for me at least.

I would advise against the surplus sleeping bags. technically good value by virtue of being unbelievably cheap, but not good bags. I would say even a Wiggy's would be a noticeable step up.

I found one of the bivy bags in woodland camo for $5 at the Goodwill over the weekend. Looks barely used with a screen in the face area and a loop on the outside that looks like it could be used to suspend the area away from the face.

Seems like a good piece of gear. I was wondering about modding it to add a hoop or something to keep it away from my face rather than it be right on my face. Anyone ever do this?

I've used both the MSS bags and the new tan USMC bag with bivy. The old style will keep you very warm if you utilize all the pieces, but it is also very heavy. The new system is not as warm but the bivy is greatly improved and it is a tad lighter.

I'd recommend the MSS if you are truck/base camp hunting considering how bulky and heavy it is. The new system is workable for a backpacking bag but is still heavy. I slept in the new system for a month in Norway (lows in the mid 20's) inside a tent with baselayers on and I was plenty warm.

I'll add that I'm a marine that is used to sleeping in crappy conditions so "plenty warm" varies from one man to the next.
