Tell me if I really need one

What's the meta for puffies these days out west?

I run ambient's as mid layers with a wind blocking outer shell and stay pretty warm.

Mostly east coast hunting for me but curious for future hunts out west.

A down jacket and a lightweight rain layer are a must for me - pretty much regardless of time of year. They serve as a safety net and will save your butt if things go south. When I hunt in below freezing temperatures (especially when I will be doing a lot of sitting), down pants are a must as well.

As far as the meta, pick your poison. Research the amount and quality of down fill in garments before you pull the trigger because they are pretty darned expensive. I have a Kuiu Superdown Pro set, but they are really not what I would consider warm garments for cold temperatures. Stone Glacier's puffys are too fragile for me. If you want true cold weather protection, consider Feathered Friends options (Volant and Khumbu) that are made for the climbing community (think 8,000 meter folks).

I don’t have a down puffy, but really like my Sitka jacket with the synthetic fill. Never leaves my pack unless I’m wearing it.

Puffy stays in the pack bro
Sounds like you have experience. I'm going archery elk in Colorado this September. I've never had a puffy but it's on the guide equipment list. I've been out there before and always just layered. Do the sleeves on a puffy interfere with archery? Would a puffy vest be better? Recommend down or Prinaloft fill? Thanks in advance for advice!

Figured I would leave an update. I ended up getting the Kings Camo puffy jacket and pant for 60% off in their close out sale - windproof and water resistant. It packs down small and gives some peace of mind. Appreciate all of your advice.

I've been to CO a bunch of times and at different times of the year but mainly just the Denver area. I'm familiar with the weather in that neck 9f the woods but I'm making my first trek out to hunt and will be much farther west for first rifle this upcoming season. Do I really need to bring a puffy layer? Trying to plan ahead and streamline my gear.
I would say yes find a light one and have it in your pack. It’s nice to throw on if you have gotten sweaty gaining elevation and then sit down to glass for a spell
