Tell me about the 6 arc

I've got a bunch of kids that are crazy about hunting and shooting.

I also have a 16" Daniel that's my coyote AR. But I'm thinking that I'd be better off swapping the barrel out to 6 arc. Probably an 18" with a can.

Something with better ballistics than the 5.56 and just more versatile. A gun the kids could shoot all day when dad goes to the range and then shoot a deer with.

I'd be handloading Bergers for it.

Listened to the Hornady boys talking about the arc and they're using it for prs. Said it's very soft to shoot but in the bolt guns it keeps up with some of the hotter 6's.

Anyone else running one?

Great cartridge. Easy on brass, powder, the shoulder with long barrel life. Very effective on deer sized game. I’m taking it on my hunting vacation starting Saturday.

I’ve got a 12.5” 6ARC AR upper. Getting velocities of 2,520fps with Hornady 103gr ELDx.

Very accurate. Very mild shooting. Runs great. Still super sonic past 1000 yards even in a 12.5” barrel.

Point being, I’d not only recommend 6ARC, I’d recommend a shorter barrel. A short barrel 6ARC blows a 77gr 5.56 out of the water even when the 5.56 is using an 18” barrel.

Really fun cartridge. I snagged an SSK 20" barrel for my G2 Contender. Short, light, accurate, easy to shoot. Have only shot factory ELDM out of it, but haven't found those lacking.

My wife and grandson love shooting it. I can see it becoming a very common choice when we hunt most anywhere.

Yes. Do it. Factory ELD-M is the same price as ELD-M for 223. This Howa Mini in 6 ARC has become my go to for everything here in Montana. Yes, everything.

That's awesome!!!!

Yeah I was figuring the ammo cost is about the same between 223/5.56. Scheels seems to keep the heavy 6 mil bullets in stock too.

Thought about the 22 but there's better selection for the 6.

Oh that'd be fun! I do have a a couple SBR lowers...

2525 is about what I get out of factory 108s and a 16" barrel. You must be hand loading? Any load details you'd be willing to share?

I have a 16” gas gun and get 2500+ with factory 108’s and just under 2700 with hand loaded 95gr TMK’s.

It’ll do anything I need it to do.

If you don’t hunt in a 6mm restricted state, and your kids aren’t going to shoot game past 300 yards; not sure the extra gun is worth it over .223. If they’re going to shoot past 600 yards, you may be toting a long barrel or need more case capacity.

But for 0-600 - the 6ARC is an easy button for sure

How do you like the Stockys stock. I like the vertical grip but I've heard of fitment issues.
I like it a lot. It could benefit from a shorter trigger reach but even my 10yo has no issues shooting it well due to the super low recoil. I do have to remind him to use proper trigger finger position though. For the price, it really can't be beat.

I did have it bedded. it definitely doesn't fit perfectly out of the box like the Tikka versions do. It does drop right in though. I ordered the sporter contour and had to open the barrel channel quite a bit to get the clearance I wanted. Doing it again I'd order the larger barrel contour version.

Nope, that’s just Hornady 103gr commercial ammo, standard Pro Chrono Pal chronograph. You’ll often see potentially significant differences in velocity between barrels. Yes, I do handload, not for 6ARC yet though.

My velocities are in line with others I’ve talked to in the various communities for that barrel length and load. Anywhere from mid high 2,400’s to low 2,500’s.

I can't tell from the pics if your Howa Mini is the sporter or heavier barrel.

Do it. 14” on an SBR is sweet.

Howa Mini are great guns, and 6ARC runs great in them too. The Stocky’s are good fitment, sometimes need a little work or bedding, but most have not. My Mini didn’t.

Consider the 22 ARC as well.

I ran the 224 Grendel in a AR before Hornady turned it into the 22ARC or made the 6 ARC. And I looked at the 6mm versions at the time. The 6mm Grendel variants have been wildcatted for a long time and I think Hornady was genius for standardizing them. A friend has one he loves.

Hornady changed up the 6mm case size, made it a little smaller than other 6mm wildcats. No big thing though.

No direct experience with the 6 ARC, but the little Grendel’s are perfect for AR.
