I am set for a CO muzzleloader hunt this fall. I already have a TC Omega at my disposal and am hoping to use that. I understand all the QLR issues but I would like to give this gun a try at the range before looking into other options. I have Fury Universal fits and MMP sub bases on order and have two questions:

1. Should I also look at getting my hands on another conical bullet type (I was looking at the No Excuses) or if the gun does not shoot well with the sub base am I SOL anyways?

2. Is there any reason to try add in a wool wad between the powder and the sub base to help as well?

Thanks in advance

Cool. The Omega is one of the (maybe the) finest modern muzzys ever designed.

Did I miss it? What species are you hunting?

As for the QLA, I’d shoot it with your chosen bullet and see before worrying about the QLA. Very easy to have it cut off and recrowned too if you need to.

I’d say no reason to use a wool wad with a sub-base.

My bad forgot to add it will be for elk.

And thanks for the feedback!

My omega shoots the 297gr thor hammer hollow points very well. Order the sizing kit, find the one that fits your specific bore then order a full pack.

I also highly recommend the williams Western precision front sight with .019" fiber optic insert and one of their matching rear peeps. I used their ace-in-the-hole pic rail so I can swap a scope on for hunting deer here in MN.

What are the QLR or QLA issues?

Thanks.
Mine is an Encore but back 18-20's ago maybe still they were not true. Bored off center or something. I just know I spent tons money(especially for me at that time) on components trying to find a load I could shoot comfortably at a deer. Ended up stumbling across David White (online) who was pretty slick with encores and contenders. I had tried everything else so thought I'd let him have at it. He cut it off and redone it and shortened the ramrod. When I got it back it shot good. It was like a completely different ML.

I don't know if this is what is still going on with them or not but that was the QLA issue I had.

Yeah some percentage of Encore and Omega QLAs (~1” section of muzzle with no rifling) were not bored concentric with the bore. Which didn’t matter if you shot sabots (which is what they were designed and marketed to shoot). But, that can cause issues with bore-sized conicals. Fix is to use a sub-base or to cut the QLA off and recrown. Very easy fix either way if you have a bad one.

My Omega Z5 hammers with the 340gr Hornady Bore driver ELDX, black horn 209 and magnum 209 primers. Getting just over 2000fps with 95gr by weight of BH. I’ve heard great things about terminal performance on the fury bullets as well but never seen it for myself

I shot sabots and it very much mattered in mine. I was told by some that different barrels preferred different sabots. I ended up ordering different ones to try 3 petal 4 petal ribbed etc. Nothing would keep it minute of basketball. After the chop/crown none of that mattered. It would shoot anything plenty good enough. To be fair from the bench it did kinda prefer the 3 petal but they all worked just fine and off the bench I couldn't/can't shoot the difference between them.

Generally speaking, the sabot/bullet combo you choose makes a huge difference in most muzzys. That’s mainly a fit (loaded OD) issue though.
