There’s many factors to this and mostly it depends on the individual and the quality you’re looking at.
Umm...that is obvious. I am not looking for an exact number. A range or typically would certainly be doable. A qualification for when they are trying to win the big contest and spend extra time vs a budget mount.

Simple question really.

I'm not a professional. I have done a few of my own shoulder mounts and I do my own tanning. It only takes a week to tan a hide. You can prep the form and mount the antlers while the hide is tanning. Then I place the hide on the form and set the eyes, ears, nose and pin the hide to hold it in place. Then it is a matter of taking 15 minutes everyday to check on it as it dries and touch up anywhere that needs an adjustment. Drying time depends on temperature and humidity in my shop. The total time from start to finish on a shoulder mount is probably 2-3 weeks but I'm cautious and continue to check on it until week 4.

Actual hands on time including turning eyes/ears/nose, fleshing, tanning, form prep, mounting is maybe 15-20 hours if I added it all up. A pro may be less time since they are surely faster than I am at those tasks.

If I were ever to take an animal to a professional taxidermist there is no way I would leave the antlers with him. He can call me when he is ready to work on my animal and then I will bring the antlers in. I know several people who take this approach and seem to have good experiences.

That is exactly what I do. My taxidermist luckily is a good friend (actually a friend of my dads for almost 40 years). But even with him I drop off the cape and bring the antlers/horns so we discuss poses and get the form and pick out the form right there. Hand him my deposit...get my receipt. He calls in usually 6-8 months that my form is there and I bring my antlers/horns in. Get a call back in a month to pick them up and good to go.

I think 90% of guys bring it on themselves with crappy taxis and getting screwed.
