Tarptent any good?? Any info or experience welcomed

I have used them off and on a lot. Had them in 30-40 mph winds and expected the tent to be tattered and shredded. But they held strong. Also have had them in some snowstorms and they held up fine.

For the weight and price they are pretty good tents.

Setup tarp tent in the mountains for the first a few weeks ago. Had 30 mph winds and freezing rain. Woke up to the windward side of the tent covered in over an inch of ice. Held strong.

Rainshadow and squall. Basically same design the rainshadow is just the 3 man version. The squall is like a 1.5 man.

I've used a double rainbow for several years. It has held up very well to all sorts of weather. A guy I work with took his double rainbow to New Zealand and got hit with a super nasty blizzard at high elevations. His pics of the tent and storm make it look like Mt. Everest and his tarptent held.

My SST2 rocks! Lotsa room for 1 that is claustrophobic. 3.5lbs. Damaged the zipper being stupid and the mfr replaced it free. Exceptional customer support.

Tarptents generally get rave reviews and are a great, super light tent for the price. If I bought a tarptent it would likely be a Scarp. With that said, if you have the $ buy a 4 season Hilleberg! I have a Nallo 3 that has gobs of room. If I want to go super light I use just the fly. With painters plastic it only weighs around 3 lbs and is bomberproof. I've used just the fly setup on several early season Alaska, Colo, and Wyo trips. I have Exped Aries 2 person tent that is similar to my Nallo. I've used the fly off my Exped as well.

I use the Tarptent single Rainbow and have spent about 30 nights in it as I have several other shelters. What I have not seen mention of and something you should be aware of is condensation in these single wall shelters. I spent 3 nights in it last week in pouring rain, shelter never leaked, but lots of condensation. If I had to do it over again, I would buy the Double rainbow or the Moment with liner. Great shelters and not as fragile as some lightweight shelters.

I have the moment. The weight to size for me is perfect. I'm 5'8" and don't touch the ends inside. The vestibule is a little small for gear, but it works. Had it in Montana during 40 mph winds all night and snow, held up just fine. I really like mine.

Do you have the liner in your Moment?

DOUBLE Moment!? I have not been on Henry's site for a couple years, ...resisting the urge. The weight is probably more than I want to carry for that type of shelter. If you want extremely lightweight, look at gossamer Gears. "The One" I have had mine for several years now, absolute work of art, but only for certain non hunting trips as it weighs 18 oz. MLD is another company to look at that has great shelters, I reall like their Duomid.

Best affordable lightweight tents out there. There are better unaffordable and/or not-lightweight tents, but I've never been able to justify replacing my contrail. I use a floorless tent for week-long hunts, but that's a different kind of undertaking.

Double Rainbow user here. Highly recommend. I like the dual doors and vestibules. I put my pack on one side and can still roll over and whiz out the other side in the middle of the night.
