Tariffs hitting Leica May 1st

What is the current tariff rate on Japanese goods? Same as European? If you weren't able to purchase new glass before the tariffs I can only imagine they will continue to change and to just wait a week or a month

Tariff's, Have not seen one take effect yet? Just talk. Seem's like a good ploy to raise prices. If they do go through, just don't buy the product. The price will drop. Consumer driven economy right.
There is a new 10% tariff on all goods. I just wrote a $9,000 check to fedex for duty and brokerage. Last month that same bill was $1000.

There is a good argument to be made that the additional "reciprocal" tariffs that were paused for 90 days are "talk" and just a bargaining chip...but just as likely they are also a bait and switch, because without them people would lose their minds over an across the board 10% tariff. As it is, people by and large dont even know it was implemented. Trust me, it is very much in effect.

That doesn't align with what I have been hearing the past month. Nor with corporations advising their green card and visa employees not to travel outside the US as they may not be allowed reentry. The list of companies includes Google, Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft.

Seeing some of that in healthcare as well.

None of which would ever gaslight their employees due to political bias lol.
So your answer is to say anything that doesn't support your position is invalid on its face, not worth examining.

Amazon donated 1 million to Trump's inagrel fund. Bezos overrode the former independence of the Washington Post and did not allow its editors to endorse Harris. Bezos attended the inauguration, and Amazon is paying Melania 40 million to make a documentary of her. Yet, your answer is he is playing politics against this administration and gaslighting his employees to do it?

I mean, I guess when facts on the ground don't show what you want, it is easier to play pretend.

Note, I am not attributed good or bad to the policies. Perhaps this is exactly what this country needs, I just hate seeing a square called a ball, then being told I should play baseball with it because balls are good for sports.

See there, @Macintosh, you just need to follow @Weldor's advice not buy the product until the price drops. Is that check you wrote even real? Tariffs are just talk, you know.

Yeah, eff that first amendment. They didn’t really become important until the second.

Yeah funny thing about not being a citizen, you probably shouldn't have the right to speak out against the country you're a guest in. They can kick rocks if they don't like the US then they don't get to be here enjoying the perks and institutions of higher learning. Plenty of other students are happy they're gone so they can go back to focusing on learning instead of getting harassed by extremists on campus.

Your statement about companies warning their employees not to travel doesn't mean there's an issue is what I'm saying, especially when the companies referenced are questionable politically. Heck it may be an excuse just to con them out of vacation time.

It sure is sad so many Americans still buy the "reciprocal tariff" propaganda because they don't understand the difference between a tariff and a fair-trade deficit. Believe me, as a business owner, I really want this current administration to succeed, otherwise we will all suffer, but what we are seeing is either pure economic incompetence or deliberate rigging of the stock market.

Well, @Poser to be fair I cant blame anyone who isnt aware. The media and everyone else has focused on the much higher tariff's, while the 10% base tariff was hardly covered at all.

Regardless, that 10% goes directly to our bottom line, we have no choice but to try to make it up somewhere. Yesterday I raised the price we charge for a return shipping label for our warranty and service work. I also raised prices on all of the spare parts we carry. I estimate that together that will make up about 17-18% of the gap in margin$ caused by the tariff. Right now I'm looking for other places I can make up some of the gap before we start raising prices on our bread and butter products. But for certain we are going to raise prices, we are just trying to minimize it. all this chaos has consumer spending off a bit compared to last year, and a sudden large price increase wont make that better. But at some point there is no choice. I have a team of Americans all depending on the health of this business for their jobs. In the particular segment of the industry I work in virtually nothing is made in the USA, so our competitors are facing the same thing, and there is zero chance we just magically shift production here overnigh. Plus its a global company and the US doesnt make up the majority of their sales...so even if the US dries up for them it would probably not be in their best interest to shift production. That might open up an opportunity for another company, but for me and my American colleagues it could easily put us out of work. So yes, American consumers will absolutely be paying for this in the near term whether that is in a direct price increase, or in some other ancillary cost or service associated with a product, and likely also seeing reduced options in the medium term as companies focus on where they can be profitable. Long term will have to see--I'm not making any bets either way.

If the big reciprocal tariffs are allowed to go into place, that's whn all hell is going to break loose. Regardless of whether that's good or bad in the long run, that wont be pretty in the short and medium term.

...or a negotiating tactic that will pass after a little discomfort?

Unfortunate for your argument, but a non citizen does have the constitutional right to express criticism of government policy.

And you really believe that?
I was just reading that approximately 200 tariff deals have been made so far and deals are continuing to be made, so yes I do believe it because that's exactly what's happening. China will play hardball, they're a tough nut to crack and have the resources. I'm not scared, this is what I voted for.

Yeah this is HuffPost type stuff here... These people aren't protesting innocently at the capital or exercising free speech and you know that, they're hurting American citizens by disrupting them. The other students on these campuses who've paid a fortune to be there trying to learn deserve to be able to do so without disruption of extremist non-citizens who are creating chaos on campus. Nobody is getting their student visas revoked for a peaceful protest somewhere, the ones being revoked are disrupting citizens who deserve to go to the classes they paid for without being harassed or having their campus shutdown and classes canceled because of non-citizens who are guests in the country ranting about things that the campus has nothing to do with anyway.

There are examples of visas revoked, subsequent detainments and pending deportations for merely writing OpEds in student newspapers.
