So, I had a wild idea this morning. We measure rifle accuracy in MOA. That makes me wonder how accurate a tank cannon is in MOA. Anyone have experiences with tanks?

I worked on M1 Abrams for 20 years. The sighting in is boresighting and "screening" which is zeroing is hitting a 175 cm circle at 1500 meters, which works out to 1.2 mil accuracy.
Interesting, we're you guys able to hold groups at that yardage? Or was one hit good enough?

Either way, I'm surprised that it's capable of doing that repeatedly. Off hand, do you know what the effective range is on those tanks?

I wonder if there if there are tank operators somewhere saying "my tank is 1/2 moa all day, if I do my part".
Hahaha it's always the "if I do my part" that let's me throw out all the flyers. Don't hurt my perfect 3 shot group. 🤣

They would fire multiple shots to verify the zero. It's a surprisingly accurate weapon, and the zeroing process is quite complicated to take advantage of that. I'm sure it's upgraded now, but the last ones I worked on had an effective range of 5000 meters, which was kind of limited by the LRF more than anything.

I have a buddy that was a tanker, and just yesterday we were talking about this kind of stuff. He was explaining how the computer works it all out for all the constant changes on slopes etc.

when i did naval surface fire support (i.e. 5" gun bombardment of shore), we had to hit specific targets, but i don't recall ever being told the size of those targets. We did accidentally light an island on fire, that was pretty cool.
