My three year old son has been asking to go turkey hunting for the last year. He loves all things outdoors, but has a fascination with turkeys. I told him we could go on opening day. I set the alarm for 3:45AM. 2AM my son comes in the room ready to go. What kinda 3 year old does that lol. He just loves it. We got into the blind nice and quiet just before 5AM. Nothing all morning until 8:30AM I hear a gobble. My son looked at me with excitement. Do some light calling and the bird gobbled again. I told him to get ready and keep watching down the road. Within seconds a bird pops into view….then two more. A gang of jakes. They see the decoy and b line for it. My son is telling me to shoot all three of them . They beat the crap out of my full strut tom decoy. I had a decision to make. I typically won’t shoot a Jake, but I just felt like I couldn’t pass up the opportunity with my little guy and I didn’t want to disappoint him, so I waited for one of the Jake’s to break off and smoked it. My son was fired up. It honestly was so awesome to see. A day in the field I won’t ever forget.

Fast forward to today. Same setup as opening day, except today I got a a tom with some beautiful barring on his fan to read the script. Bitter sweet that the season is over for me already, but will get some much needed sleep lol. Another season in the books!

Hell yeah man having a kid with you always lowers the bar on what's acceptable to shoot

Such a cool experience for both of you. Good on you for making it happen while he was there. He’ll remember that forever.
