Updating my glasses and trying decide if the EL’s are with the money. I don’t glass for hours at a time but need better glass than what I have.

both are amazing. The 12x50 ELs are my go to, i also owned the SLC 10x42 for a little while and compared them a fair amount. One thing i noticed is that the ELs even at 12x showed more in focus area than the 10x SLC due to the flat field in the ELs. This really only comes into play if you're glassing off a tripod a lot though which i do. The main reason i went with ELs is that they don't make the slc in a 12x otherwise i may have gone with slc.

Good info, thanks. But these glasses are not for a tripod.

Both are excellent. Ideally, try them both out side by side in low light and let your eyes decide if the ELs are worth the extra money. For my eyes they are (love the field flattening of the ELs). I also prefer the ergonomics of the ELs. Everyone's eyes are different though. Can't go wrong either way.

I ended up with EL 10x50. The SLC didn’t offer me the same “wow factor” without the field flattening. The size difference of the 50 over 42 didn’t concern me, so I opted for the larger FOV and theoretical better brightness tho I admit I didn’t have the opportunity to view both side by side during low light conditions.

EL has better coatings, better handling for most hand types, and sharper edges which makes the FOV appear wider than the SLC HD. Some people say it produces a rolling ball effect when panning quickly because of the field flattener lens.

SLC HD is a tad smaller and has minimally better light transmission because it lacks the improved lens design (flat field of view). It weighs an ounce or two less.

I find the EL view more impressive, so my vote goes for the EL.

What do you have for tripod glass? I hand hold my 12s all the time..

If they're still hand held, get the 8x32 els.

I don’t have a tripod. I’ve looked at more powerful glasses but I’m not steady enough off hand to use them.

If you're going handheld, and they're an all arounder, I would go with SLCs in either 8x42 or 10x42. I love both the 8x32 ELs and 12x50 ELs but they don't quite fit your intended uses, from what I can tell.

I can only repeat what tdhanses said above and that is that you're missing out by not using a tripod.

Not sure if this is OP’s cup of joe, but the Canon IS WP L 10x42 is as good as the Swaro’s optically but has image stabilization. I own it alongside the SLC HD’s and the EL’s and it is really no contest handheld once IS is enabled. Even on a tripod it’s very good.

I'm trying to understand you see as the advantage of the 8x42 slc is over the 8x32el? The EL has a bigger fov, and weighs 6oz less and in my experience is within 1 minute light transmission wise.

I personally feel a 42mm is better as an all arounder. Based on the OPs stated needs (western big game, no tripod, assuming all arounder since not stating otherwise) I feel a set of 42mm binos are a better choice. 32mm binos, though lighter, don't hold quite as steady for me.

As previously stated I love the 8x32 ELs but I wouldn't have them as my lone pair, I would match them with a higher power/larger objective bino to cover more hunting scenarios (I love 12x50s). If solely for archery elk hunting I would go with 8x32 ELs.

Regardless of all that, you're definitely correct that the 8x32 ELs would work great for the OP, and I can see why others might prefer them to 8x42 SLCs.
